Description: This is a beginner-level children's book in the Birhoɽ language of India, a minority ‘tribal’ language belonging to the Munda language family. ""Abun Ari Re (Our Surroundings)"" represents the first-ever publication in this endangered language. Several hundred copies were printed and freely distributed by Living Tongues Institute researchers to Birhor communities in 2022. Description: Writing a dictionary for a critically endangered language like Birhoɽ is a difficult task. While the older community members still retain their language and use it among themselves, the younger people speak it only to a more limited degree, as they frequently migrate to nearby towns in search of livelihoods in Jharkhand state.
