Holy Geeeez…Didn’t See This Tsunami Coming!
Fuck YES! Two of the most primal bands in underground filth and grime have converged in one LP split: Denver’s PRIMITIVE MAN and the Brighton’s SEA BASTARD! The new album comes out March 7th via Dry Cough Records/Black Reaper Records and was debuted on Noisey earlier today. Give ear….
Pre-Order: option I and option II
What If John The Baptist Had a Guitar & Amp?
On the D&S Facebook page, we just posted a track from He Whose Ox is Gored, a Seattle band whose name makes reference to a scripture in the Old Testament (Torah). The O.T. has quite a rep for its harshness, with all the stonings, impalings, mass circumcisions of Philistine foes and such, but the New Testament does some serious ass kicking of its own! Introducing the doom metal project JOHN THE BAPTIST. I’m sure if he’d had access to a guitar and amp, John The Baptist would have been a sort of Black Tar Prophet of A.D. 1. Well, it’s fun to imagine the possibilities - and at least one band has. From Finland, this is the debut EP by John The Baptist: ‘Dead End, Lies and Death’ (2015). The vocals are traditional doom (a bit wobbly at times, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit - especially the song “Space Cowboy”). As ol’ John T. Baptizer himself might say, “give ear…” (Editor)
A visit between our Swedish correspondent, Sarah Miss Sabbath, and the legendary ritual, psychedelic doom band BONG.from the United Kingdom. If you enjoy listening to Sarah’s interview, stay tuned, because there’s more coming from Desertfest London!
No question about it: there has been a huge underground resurgence in heavy music in Brazil, whether we’re talking Saturndust or Space Guerrilla, these are top-notch bands that are putting their own unique mark on the world of doom-sludge metal and stoner-psychedelic rock.
Last year, we introduced you to RED MESS from Londrina, Brazil and reviewed their debut EP. Turns out that big media conglomerate Noisey has discovered them, as well, and today have premiered the digital release of two tracks (“Daybreak Dope” and “Ready to Go”) from the band’s newest EP, ‘Drowning in Red’ (2015).
Having championed the group from the beginning, we couldn’t be happier to see them achieve a greater level of recognition and success! Red Mess has definitely stepped up their game for this one, too. Here are all three tracks, streaming for your enjoyment.
Dazzling solos, grungy hooks, and low-tuned, fuzzy riffage abound. Enjoy the ride!
Experimental post-metal from Krasnoyarsk, Siberia now from another mysterious collection of artists known as BELOW THE SUN. This track from their recently released ‘Envoy’ (2015) was enough to grab my attention. This is not your usual pasty, vanilla flavored post-whatever music, though. “Cries of Dying Stars” gives us exactly that–a song filled with anguished emotion and feverish drama, while retaining a dense, atmospheric veneer the way through.
First music to be heard from the upcoming album ‘Crooked Doors’ (out April 7th on Relapse Records) by Atlanta’s ROYAL THUNDER! This is the single “Forget You.” Got a feeling you’ll enjoy this one.
Last month, we premiered a new track by Ennoea, which will be the cornerstone of our next compilation, focused on the New Jersey heavy underground (‘Jersey: Dirty, Doomed & Stoned’), and the bands that gig regularly between there and Philly, which borders nearby. This month, we share a track by the amazing Draugrstone of Blackwood, NJ, who have recorded “First Stone” for this project. It’s one of the finest examples of the doom genre I’ve heard recently and may be one of my favorite songs to start the year. Can’t rave enough about those amazing riffs and trills, set to a commanding beat! Give it a listen….and if you’re a band from the Jersey area and would like to be considered for the compilation, send an email to: doomedandstonedofficial@gmail.com by January 31st.
Grab the free download of Riley Hawk: Northwest The ‘Riley Hawk: Northwest Blow Out EP’ (2015) is officially out and free for the download from Scion AV. The compilation was put together by pro skater Riley Hawk, with four new songs by Kadavar, the Black Angels, Loom and Hot Lunch, described as “the perfect soundtrack for your next shredding session.” And coming soon, the video series Scion x Riley Hawk Driven, following Hawk and the Shep Dawgs as they hit their favorite skateparks in the Pacific Northwest. Rad!
Just discovered New York tripped-out, dreamy doom trio GHXST via Destroy//Exist and I really, really dig. There’s a hazy, dream-like quality to Shelley X’s vocals (I Die: You Die describes her sound as “druggy”). The dense, smoke-filled atmosphere underscored by Chris Wild’s droning guitars + otherworldly soloing and Nathan LaGuerra’s incessant drum beat. GHXST’s Bandcamp page has a ton of singles, including a very unique cover of Rob Zombie’s ‘Dragula’ that MUST be heard (I much prefer it to the original). Now, the group is poised to release the 'Nowhere EP’ on 1/26 via CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH. It’s streaming digitally at the moment on their Soundcloud page and I can’t get enough! Fans of UZALA and Sonic Youth should take to it quite well.
