EffectCraft is an open-source app that provides an alternative to Adobe After Effects, allowing you to create motion graphics using layers, animations, and effects on a timeline. You can combine text, shapes, footage, nested compositions, cameras, and lights to assemble anything from animated titles to 3D scenes, with keyframe animation controls and curve editing.
Animate with precision
In EffectCraft, you can use Bézier curves and points, allowing you to smooth motion paths, create custom vectors, and control the speed of each animation, including ease-in, ease-out, or hold effects. You also have roving keyframes to automatically redistribute movement between multiple points in an animation, thus maintaining a constant, uniform speed along a path. This system is useful when you want to make a title do things like appear, bounce slightly, and end up fixed in a specific place.
Combine layers and a large collection of effects
When composing a scene, you can add solid, shape, text, footage, null, adjustment, and nested composition layers, as well as parenting and track mattes. You can blend elements with dozens of blend modes and organize complex scenes without turning each element into an independent project. What's more, you'll have more than 250 effects at your disposal, including blurs, color correction, distortion, generation, keying, particles, simulation, stylization, and time effects. These include preset parameters, which you can animate directly from the composition to achieve progressive changes in color, size, position, or intensity.
Create 3D scenes and automate properties
EffectCraft allows you to convert layers into 3D elements and work with cameras, lights, and depth of field. In addition to creating ray-traced elements, you can use orbit, pan, and zoom tools to move the camera over the scene. You can also use JavaScript expressions directly on the properties, with functions such as wiggle, loops, and cross-layer references.
Render your project in different formats
The render queue allows you to prepare compositions to export them later in different formats. EffectCraft supports H.264 and ProRes video with alpha channel; 32-bit PNG, TIFF, and EXR sequences; GIFs; and Lottie files for both importing and exporting. This way, you can use a composition for conventional video and also export assets with transparency or animations intended for web projects. The app is written in Rust, making it very lightweight compared to the most popular alternatives on the market, such as After Effects. What's more, it's completely free of charge.
My experience with EffectCraft
Upon opening EffectCraft, I created a project to edit a 4K UHD video at 23.976 FPS. I imported the videos from my drone that I wanted to edit, creating sequences and adding all kinds of effects to enhance the viewing experience. Instead of simply displaying the name of the place I was in with an overlay in the center of the video, I created a title on the edge of a mountain so that, as I moved forward with the drone, the letters would get closer as if they were really there. Then I added a blur effect and a color correction and animated their parameters from the timeline. To finish, I sent the project to the render queue and reviewed the available export options before obtaining the final file.
What I liked most about EffectCraft and what could be improved
· What I liked the most: the combination of graphics, effects, expressions, and 3D composition in a single editor, so you can create everything from the simplest animation to the most elaborate scenes.
· What I would improve: I would expand the amount of resources and settings related to the workflow so projects are easier to work with when they have significantly more layers and compositions. Furthermore, its performance depends a lot on the CPU.
