Etymology 1
[edit]From siroop, apparently via an intermediate sroop [recorded once],[1] in which a t was inserted to better fit Dutch phonology. For a similar insertion of t into sr compare Proto-Germanic *straumaz (“river, stream”) from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (“to flow, run”).
