Etymology 1

From siroop, apparently via an intermediate sroop [recorded once],[1] in which a t was inserted to better fit Dutch phonology. For a similar insertion of t into sr compare Proto-Germanic *straumaz (river, stream) from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (to flow, run).
