Putting the Law Within Reach: CLIC’s AI Powered Approach to Serving the Community
Legal issues can arise unexpectedly, leaving members of the public confused about their rights and responsibilities. Without a professional legal background, understanding where to begin is often the greatest challenge. In moments like these, access to clear, reliable legal information can make a critical difference.
HKU Engineering Recognition Ceremony (Undergraduate Students 2024–25)
The inaugural HKU Engineering Recognition Ceremony (Undergraduate Students 2024–25) was held on April 29, 2026 at the Rayson Huang Lecture Theatre. Nearly 200 awardees, along with their families, friends, faculty members gathered to celebrate the exceptional academic achievements of our undergraduate students, as well as their leadership, and accomplishments beyond the classroom.
HKU Engineering Projects Secure Funding in Third Round of ITC’s RAISe+ Scheme
HKU Engineering have secured funding for three projects in the third round of the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus (RAISe+). This success highlights the Faculty's robust commitment to translating world-class research into practical, market-ready solutions that address pressing global challenges.
HKU Engineer Jiawei Zhou Receives 2026 Croucher Innovation Award
Professor Jiawei Zhou, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been honoured with the 2026 Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award for his groundbreaking research in thermal management.
HKU Engineering Scholars Uncover Brain's Rapid Switches Between Internal and External Processing
A team led by Professor Ed X. WU, Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering & Lam Woo Professorship in Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Alex T. L. LEONG, Research Assistant Professor from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has achieved a major breakthrough in understanding how the brain processes information through large-scale network changes.
HKU engineers shifted GaN emission from UV to blue by mechanical straining
A research team from the have successfully used mechanical stretching technology to dynamically control the emission colour of gallium nitride (GaN) material from "ultraviolet (UV) to blue light", providing a new semiconductor material control solution for future advanced power transistors, optoelectronic components, radio frequency components, and micro-LED displays.
HKU Engineering Scholars Develop Durable, Skin-Friendly Soft Materials for Next-Gen Wearable and Biomedical Devices
A research team led by Professor Lizhi Xu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has created a new type of ionogel that is soft and flexible, yet strong enough to withstand significant mechanical stress, making it ideal for wearable and biomedical applications.
Flying Fast, Flying Safe: How SUPER Drone Is Shaping Tomorrow’s Skies
After almost 100 test flights, a dedicated team of researchers at the University of Hong Kong (HKU)’s Mechatronic and Robotic Systems Lab came close to their dream invention – a micro air vehicle (MAV) capable of flying at high speed safely.
Bridging Dreams and Career: Cindy Choi
Seeing the completion of a bridge or civil structure built from scratch gave Cindy Choi Tsz Wing a strong sense of satisfaction. “Some days are tough, but when you stand under a bridge you designed, knowing it’ll serve people for decades, that’s satisfying—that’s what keeps me going.”
HKU's Ultra-Thin Diamond Fabrication Technology Named Among China’s Top 10 Scientific Advances of 2025
The research project “Scalable fabrication of flexible, ultra-flat diamond films” co-led by Professor Zhiqin Chu in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Professor Yuan Lin in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been selected as one of China’s Top 10 Scientific Advances of 2025. This innovative technology has successfully enabled the large-scale, high-quality preparation of diamond membranes, laying a critical foundation for the development of next-generation electronic and optical devices.
X-Dimension: Frontiers in Engineering Science Forum
In light of accelerating technological integration worldwide, the Department of Mechanical Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) organised the X-Dimension: Frontiers in Engineering Science Forum on April 12-13. The event aimed to address the engineering science challenges of the new era.
HKU-led Team Develops Privacy-Preserving System for Secure Edge Data Analysis
A cross-institutional research team led by Professor Ngai Wong and Dr Zhengwu Liu from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in collaboration with Tsinghua University and the Southern University of Science and Technology, has developed Co-Located Authentication and Processing (CLAP), a revolutionary privacy-preserving system that overcomes the trade-off between security and performance in edge computing devices.
HKU Engineering Researchers Unveil Human-Like AI Tool to Boost Disease Diagnosis
Cells contain a wealth of information about health and disease, but extracting that data reliably from microscope images remains a major challenge. Many important differences between healthy and diseased cells are too subtle to detect visually, while existing artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can identify such patterns often operate as “black boxes”, making their decisions hard to interpret.
HKU Engineers Develop Inch-scale Ultrahard Diamond Wafers with 200 GPa Hardness
A research team co-led by Professor Yang Lu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Chengming Li from the Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology at University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), has successfully fabricated a free-standing ultrahard diamond wafer with a diameter of up to 5 inches, a thickness of 3 mm, and a Vickers hardness exceeding 200 GPa.
