Nanorobots have shown great promise in precision medicine over the past few decades. Yet one key challenge remains: how to track and guide these tiny devices in real time as they move through complex physiological environments.
HKU Engineering develops world-first "brain-like" chip to advance quantum computing and deep-space exploration
Researchers from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Centre for Advanced Semiconductors and Integrated Circuits (CASIC), have achieved a major breakthrough in cryogenic electronics. The team have developed a programmable neuromorphic hardware platform that operates near absolute zero, providing a potential solution for scaling up quantum computers and enabling deep-space exploration.
HKU researchers discover piezoelectric effect in diamond membranes, challenging century-old scientific dogma
A research team led by Professor Zhiqin Chu, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Professor Yuan Lin, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), has reported a significant piezoelectric effect in ultrathin and ultra-flexible polycrystalline diamond membranes. This pioneering discovery challenges a century-long scientific dogma that diamonds are strictly non-piezoelectric.

HKU Engineering Congratulates Alumna Dr Lai Ka-ying on participating in Shenzhou-23 Manned Spaceflight Mission
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) extends its warmest congratulations to alumna Dr Lai Ka-ying on her being selected as a crew member of the Shenzhou-23 manned spaceflight mission. As the first Hong Kong payload specialist to journey into orbit, her mission marks a new chapter of deep participation by Hong Kong’s scientific community in the national space programmes. HKU wishes the Shenzhou-23 mission every success and wishes Ka-ying a safe and triumphant return upon the completion of the historic mission.
