The pericardium is a double-walled sac that encloses the heart. Between the visceral and parietal membranes is a space called the pericardial cavity, which contains pericardial fluid. The fluid lubricates the heart and allows beating with little friction.

Pericardial Function is to protect against myocardial microbial infection, and to protect against mechanical force trauma near the lungs. The parietal pericardium has two layers with a cavity in between with a pericardial fluid. This cavity is the pericardial cavity. There is also a visceral pericardium, which is a membrane lining the heart (superficial epicardium).
