WATCH OUT FOR THE SWAMP MONSTER!

Jack "Killer" Cabot has broken out of jail just before he's to be executed and escapes into a swamp. He comes upon an old house (of course!) and a man invites him in and tells him that he can change his appearance so the law won't recognize him. Then he proceeds to put the bite on him, after which Cabot changes into an ugly beast. Two prison guards end up tracking him down, but not before Cabot has a little accident.

A so-so story is saved by some marvelous art by Basil Wolverton. The slimy monster seen in the splash panel is replaced by Cabot's "pig/ape" in the rest of the story that appears in Stanley Morse's WEIRD MYSTERIES #5 (June 1953).

Lust, murder, revenge and yes, hallucinations and insanity -- it's all here in this chillingly weird issue of WEIRD CHILLS #1 (Stanley Morse/Key Publications, July 1954) with a cover by Bernard Baily and a story by the equally twisted Basil Wolverton.

FOZZMO'S ROBOT WOMAN

Poor Fozzmo. The brilliant scientist has got everything going for him except his looks. In an aha! moment he decides to emulate Dr. Frankenstein and create his own mate. But remember, this is a pre-Code horror comic and things usually don't go as planned. The typical bizarre and superior art is by Basil Wolverton. Although the author for this story, "Robot Woman", goes uncredited, with a main character named "Fozzmo", I have a sneaking suspicion Mr. Wolverton may have had a hand in it.
