(Pinging @forstem6 @milena-git) Regarding the future of donutmaps I have good and bad news. I will not maintain and update this repo anymore, because (the good news), donutmaps will become an extension of tmap (v4).

This is the minimal code I have in mind:

tm_shape(od) +
    tm_halflines(lwd = "flow", from = "dest") +
tm_shape(nodes) +
    tm_donuts(size = "population", parts = MV("flowA", "flowB", "flowC", "flowD"))

It will take a few months before tmap v4 will be stable. I am working towards a 'speak-peek' vignette, which will be released next week.

We also have to think about the od data classes. An option is to use the (very basic) class system from (https://github.com/mtennekes/odf), which should ideally be merged with the od package (@Robinlovelace). Or, probably better, we use the sfnetworks package, which is pretty impressive.
