Then why hasn't it been increased in all these years? 32 is ludicrously small, and there isn't even any indication of why creating a list fails. Edit: I just read this:
That's nonsense ... no page redesign is needed to increase the number of entries in a scrollable list. And the whole tone is childish, condescending, and completely self-contradictory gaslighting. Also:
How can anyone on github's staff not know what hierarchical means? Tree structured UIs are everywhere. |

Can you please elaborate why this limit is so low? I would also love to add way more lists as it helps me to find repos again because I categorize them. |

I starred a lot of really great repositories, but Lists only allows for 16 categories, which is not enough for me at all. 2024-08-29 update: Years from now, I realized that after starring thousands of repositories, I no longer remember them and couldn't possibly utilize so many repositories, despite their greatness. So, I used GitHub's API to remove all my Stars, starting from zero. |

It's a great feature, and it encourages people to star interesting repositories more often as they can organize and find them better for use. I'm really looking forward to a greater limit than the current 32. |

For goodness sakes. Can you please either delete the feature, or expand the limit to a much higher number?
You think we are incapable of scrolling 100 or 200 lines? That is absurd. You can also add a filtering feature later without blocking people from using your own feature. |

I suspect Microsoft wants to save a few bucks on database resources. Or maybe Lists' devs do not want the users creating too much groups with just one or two items. |

Hi. I really like the lists feature. But I hit the limit on the first 20-30 minutes after testing it. :) I need much bigger limit as I have more than 5k stars. That can't be easily organized in a few lists. Anyway, I like to collect interesting software projects and sort them in categories and lists so this feature is really great. I already got hooked and can't imagine living without it. Good job GitHub-ers. 👍 |

I also hit the 16 limit limitation quickly.
Before GitHub lists, I created my own lists using an external store (notion database) but the need to context switch out of the GitHub web app to save the repo and categorize it usually caused me to just defer the action 😢 due to the extra step / time needed specially since I use GitHub on mobile a lot (I use it to catch up on updates / view GitHub feed like I do my twitter feed ) Related |

@bailey When I first got my existing (~300) stars sorted out, I appreciated that there were only 16, which encouraged me to prioritize and be more thoughtful about which categories I chose. Now, I have upwards of ~600 and feel the stretch - I could benefit from at least a few more categories immediately, and perhaps more in the long-term. Maybe obvious, but my guess is that in this issue, there is a strong bias towards people that want more than 16. For myself, I came to the discussions specifically looking for commentary on this issue. I think I can appreciate a few things:
Perhaps a compromise would be to allow users to opt-out of the limit of 16 via Settings (this could go up to 1024, or some other high number). Maybe don't even broadcast that setting, except in perhaps this thread and a stack exchange post. What do you (and others) think? If there's already a plan that deviates from this, no worries but thought it was worth suggesting. |

I totally disagree with your opinions. Some people are more organised than others. If 16 is sufficient for you, then don’t use more. That doesn’t mean other peoples needs should be limited to 16. Some people are Developers other are researchers etc using lists for various reasons. Adding extra configurations for opting in or out may add more complexity for a feature this simple. |

IMHO: no limit. Why?What are the reasons for limitation @robertgid ? it's even inexplicable to me. doesn't ms shoot itself in the knee with such limitation? 😄 I can't imagine that cost reasons play a role. The Idea of the concept above (to understand as some kind of Pseudocode and how to) as opend with this lines in this post by Be kind to us! |

@mehdihadeli, @llagerlof - we definitely hear your request for unlimited lists and we definitely want to try to make that possible, but like @bailey shared, there are some current design limitations that we have to consider! In the meantime, we hope that this little bump is a little bit more helpful than the original 16. 😃 |

I was very pleased that the number of lists have been finally increased from only 16 just to find out a bit later that it has been increased only to 32, which is not much better, actually. Could anyone explain what's the technical decision behind such small number, please? Would it have so severe performance impact that it cannot be increased significantly (not just doubled, but increased to, let's say, 100, 255, or similar)? Thank you! |

The way forward should either be removing all limits on this feature or scrapping it in favor of a robust solution. Increasing the current arbitrary limit (32 as of 2024-02-06) to some slightly higher number is a waste of time that could be spent making a more complete solution. I strongly suggest following the zero one infinity rule: "arbitrary limits on the number of instances of a particular type of data or structure should not be allowed. Instead, an entity should either be forbidden entirely, only one should be allowed, or any number of them should be allowed." Otherwise star lists are strictly inferior to regular browser bookmarks, which have no such restrictions and can be organized into folders and subfolders. |
