Apologies if this is already available. I know its possible when using a basic audio amplifier like a PAM but I want to use a i2c digital chip like a NS4168, which I dont think I can control the volume via an external pot?

Would it be possible to control the sound via an ADC pin, for instance 10k pot. Similar to the dpad controls but with a voltage range determining the volume?
