Description
Summary
Request to add kernel modules for Slimbook laptops to the common akmods flavor. Slimbook is a Spanish Linux-first hardware manufacturer (since 2015) known for collaborations with KDE and other FOSS projects.
Modules Requested
| Module | Purpose | Source |
|---|---|---|
slimbook-qc71 |
Platform driver for QC71-based laptops (fan control, lightbar, performance modes) | Slimbook-Team/qc71_laptop (slimbook branch) |
slimbook-keyboard |
RGB keyboard backlight control | Slimbook-Team/slimbook-keyboard-dkms |
slimbook-yt6801 |
Ethernet controller driver for some models | Slimbook-Team/slimbook-yt6801-dkms |
Why This Fits
Per your README: "KMODs for hardware enablement will be considered for inclusion."
These are pure hardware enablement modules for a Linux-focused laptop brand. Similar to how framework-laptop enables Framework hardware, these modules enable:
- Fan speed monitoring via
lm_sensors - Keyboard backlight control
- Platform-specific power management
Current State
Slimbook maintains these as akmods in their OBS repository. The modules work on standard Fedora but cannot be installed on Fedora Atomic/uBlue images because akmod building requires kernel-devel at install time.
Additional Context
The qc71_laptop driver originated from pobrn/qc71_laptop and was extended by Slimbook to support their specific hardware variants.
There's also a NixOS PR adding this module, showing cross-distro interest.
