Umi Ka Shin, Bukit Damansara, KL

Recently, we visited Umi Ka Shin in Bukit Damansara, and had a totally amazing Japanese lunch here. A traditional Japanese restaurant, you can find all sorts of sashimi, nigiri sushi, temaki, tempura, grilled items, donburi, and more. In addition, you can enjoy various seasonal seafood here, which air flown twice a week from Japan.

Here are some of the dishes we tried:

Sanshoku Kaisen Don (RM180) - One of their signature dishes here, and i can totally understand why. Uni, ikura, negitoro and an egg yolk, all mixed together for a sinful, indulgent treat.

Ankimo (monkfish liver) (RM46) - I've always wanted to try ankimo and finally got the chance to do so here. Often considered the foie gras of the sea, the ankimo had a rich and creamy texture and was definitely very enjoyable. This is a seasonal item so please try if it’s available. Love it!

Bara Chirashi Don (RM69) - another solid don without breaking the bank. A selection of cubed fish is topped with sliced salmon sashimi and ikura for a great rice bowl.

You can also find lots of affordable set lunches here on weekdays too, with prices starting from RM26. we highly recommend the Tsukuri Setto (RM70), which is their sashimi set. We were pleasantly surprised that they served seasonal fishes like samegarei (roughscale sole) and houbou (bluefin robin) with this set along with kanpachi and Fujisan salmon. The sashimi slices were thick and fresh, absolutely delicious.  The set comes with chawanmushi, miso soup, pickles, side salad and a slice of melon.

We also had the Tempura udon set (RM29), which comes with 2 ebi tempura and some vege tempura as well as chawanmushi, pickles, salad and fruit.

To end, we had the mitarashi dango (RM15) as well as matcha ice cream imported from Japan.

There are 7 types of soups to choose from; from their limited edition Golden soup (pumpkin flavour) to their signature sukiyaki, karamiso and Japanese amber soup. We tried the Yuzu soup, tomato soup, Chicken & pork soup and sukiyaki soup and they were all nice. You can also make your own dipping sauce at the sauce condiment station.

We tried the Australian Wagyu course (RM93.90++ per adult) which comes with unlimited servings of Australian Wagyu karubi, beef chuck roll, beef karubi, pork collar, pork belly, chicken and tsukune. Our favourites are definitely the wagyu (nice marbling, tender) and pork belly.

Miyazaki Wagyu Beef Shabu-Shabu & Sukiyaki @ Hanare Japanese Restaurant, KL

Indulge in an evening of decadence at Hanare Japanese Restaurant, with premium Miyazaki wagyu beef air-flown from Japan. Located in Intermark Mall, this Japanese restaurant is no stranger to KL-ites who enjoy and appreciate authentic Japanese cuisine.

This special promotion is available for the month of June 2023. Diners can choose to have their beef sukiyaki or shabu-shabu-style. Sukiyaki is recommended for those who prefer heavier flavours, whilst shabu-shabu is great for those who prefer lighter flavours.

Each set is priced at RM480++ for 2 pax and comes with the following:

♥ 180g Mizayaki wagyu beef
♥ Two grilled Miyazaki beef skewers with cherry tomato
♥ Assortment of vegetables and noodles (udon for shabu-shabu and shirataki for sukiyaki)
♥ Dipping sauces (gomatare and ponzu for shabu-shabu and raw egg for sukiyaki)

If you're unsure on how to cook the sukiyaki / shabu-shabu, the friendly staff will be more than happy to assist you. I personally preferred the sukiyaki as I love stronger flavours, and it complemented the Miyazaki beef perfectly. The beef quality was excellent, as expected of premium Japanese beef. Great for families too, our kids thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience here at Hanare.

Reservations highly recommended; please call 03-2164 2133 to book your table.

Halal/Pork-Free.

Opening times: Lunch 12.00pm - 2.30pm; Dinner 6.00pm - 10.30pm.

Location: Hanare Japanese Restaurant, Lot G06, Ground Floor, The Intermark, 182 Jalan Tun Razak, 50400 Kuala Lumpur. (Parking RM5 per entry on weekends)

Super Ramen, Desa Park City, KL

Super Ramen is a fusion ramen restaurant located in Desa Park City, Kuala Lumpur. Most of the ramens here are served with the traditional tonkotsu broth, with non-traditional toppings such as pork chops, chicken katsu, or truffle mushroom. Other than the tonkotsu broth, they also have an interesting Japanese Nyonya curry gravy.

During our visit, we tried some of their bestsellers, including:

🍜 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧 (RM39.90)
- each bowl comes with a juicy, tender pork tomahawk marinated in Western spices such as Cajun spice, cooked sous vide and then seared in a hot pan to finish. Other toppings include corn, bamboo shoots, spring onion, fungus etc.

🍜 𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐲𝐮 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧 (RM27.90)
- for traditionalists, this is the closest you can get to the classic tonkotsu ramen. Rich and flavourful, the broth is made using at least 10 ingredients and boiled for at least 13 hours. Recommended to add on ajitama (egg) which is nice and runny. Ramen texture is good 💯 the Charsyu is slightly different from the classic Japanese version; slightly sweeter like the Chinese version.

✨ 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐲𝐨𝐳𝐚 (RM13.90)
- wonderfully juicy. The gyoza sits on a thin omelette and is drizzled with Mayo and topped with truffle oil and ebiko.

✨ 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐚𝐠𝐞 (RM12.90)
- Japanese fried chicken… crispy and moist. So good!

✨ 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 (RM13.90)

✨ 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐮 𝐊𝐢𝐤𝐮 (RM25.90)
- delicious ume cocktail whereby chrysanthemum is infused with umeshu sake. 💯

* Note: we sampled the above at their Sri Petaling outlet in February. Since then, the outlet has closed. However, the same menu / dishes are served at Desa Park City.

Opening hours: 11.30am - 3pm; 5.30-10pm.

Location: Super Ramen, FF03A-5, The Waterfront @ Park City, 5, Persiaran Residen 52200 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
