How to Throw a Boba Themed Birthday Party (Boba Cake Recipe Included!)

How time flies! I am now a mom to a teenager. Last week, we threw a Boba themed birthday party for my daughter to celebrate. Hubby went into full craft mode again and made boba-related decorations while I was in charge of the boba birthday cake. On the day, we also decided to set it up outdoors à la garden party setting.

This is a simple, naked Boba Cake with stabilized whipping cream and store-bought Boba pearls. Please stabilize your cream if you are planning to leave it at room temperature / outdoors for more than 15 minutes (as Malaysia's humid weather makes regular whipped cream melt very quickly).

Boba Cake
Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 30-45 minutes
Cooking time: 20-25minutes
Makes 1 cake

Ingredients
165g salted butter
165g caster sugar
3 eggs
165g self raising flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
1 1/2 tsp milk

For the whipped cream
120ml whipping cream
1 1/2 tbsp icing sugar
1/2 tsp gelatin
1 tbsp water

For decorating
Boba pearls (recipe here), or buy from the nearest boba shop, drained

1. Preheat oven to 190C (no fan).

2. Grease three 4-inch cake tins and line the base with greaseproof paper.

3. Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until you get a pale, fluffy mixture . This will take about 4-5 minutes. Add the egg one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract.

4. Sift the flour and baking powder, then fold into the mixture. Repeat until all the flour is incorporated. The mixture should fall off a spoon easily, add some milk if necessary.

5. Divide the mixture between the three tins, then place in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

6. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. Peel off the base papers.

7. Place mixing bowl and whisk in fridge for 10 minutes before you begin to make the stabilized whipped cream. Meanwhile, soak the gelatin with water in a bowl for 2 minutes, then mix well until dissolved. You can place it over a hot water bath to help dissolve it.

8.Pour whipping cream into mixing bowl and whisk over high speed for 20 seconds. Add icing sugar and whisk until soft peaks. Take 1 spoonful of cream and add to gelatin and mix well. Add gelatin mixture to the rest of the cream and whisk until stiff peaks. Chill in fridge until required.

9. Stack the cakes on top of each other. Carefully pierce a straw through the cakes (this will help hold the cakes together too). Dollop the stabilized cream onto the top of the cake, and carefully arrange the boba pearls on top. You can also add more pearls at the base of the cake.

Naughty Babe Dirty Duck, Desa Sri Hartamas, KL

Located in Desa Sri Hartamas, Naughty Babe Dirty Duck is the place-to-be for an amazing meat feast. True to its name, this European fusion restaurant specialises in duck and pork in a casual, relaxed setting.

The piece de resistance here is without a doubt the NBDD BBQ pork Ribs. You can go for the half slab at RM42 or go all out for the full portion at RM78. The ribs are brushed in homemade barbecue sauce and cooked to perfection, on a hot grill. The meat is tender and falls of the bone easily, and the sauce on them is absolutely delicious. Finger licking good, for sure!

Also highly recommended is the Oven-roasted Iberico spare ribs (RM88), which have been marinated with NBDD special blend of aromatic herbs and spices. As Iberico pork is used, the meat  is much richer and full in flavour. This is served with a tangy pineapple salad which helps cut through the richness of the meat.

New on the menu is the Smoky Octopus (RM88), complete with theatrics and all. It arrives with a glass dome cover, when lifted reveals a whole octopus leg enveloped in smoke. This dish uses octopus air-flown in from Spain, which is much more tender. The octopus is served with roasted potatoes.

The Dirty Duck Linguine (RM29) is sauteed with garlic, onion and chilli, then topped with smoked duck breast and fresh basil.

The Cider belly (RM40) features a slab of Sakura pork belly which has been slow cooked with "Apple Fox" cider, until the fat layers are meltingly tender. This is served with caramelised apple, mashed potato and apple sauce.

Another hot favorite off the menu was the Dirty Duck (RM40), a whole duck leg confit on a bed of yam puree, served with prunes and bacon jam. This dish now also comes with a beautifully runny 4-minute duck egg, coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried.

For dessert, we had the Magnum explosion (RM20) and Deconstructed apple pie (RM18). The latter features a whole baked apple filled with mixed nuts and dried fruits. Our kids loved the Magnum Explosion, a molten lava cake with a mini Magnum in the centre.

Great place for a family-friendly meal or to catch up with your friends

Naughty Babe Dirty Duck is celebrating its 5th year anniversary. With a minimum spend of RM50, diners can enjoy the signature ribs for RM15 (for half slab).

Complete your Christmas and New Year Party with a Naughty Platter, available for takeaway at RM330 nett. Early birds will also get a FREE bottle of red/white wine worth RM138 (for booking with full payment by 19/12/18).

Full menu can be viewed here.

Opening times: 12pm to 12am daily.

Location: Naughty Babe Dirty Duck, 42, Jalan 25/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. (Street parking available)
