Gridbike is a retro-style arcade game where you have to navigate each level on a motorcycle, rescue all the people, and avoid both the mines and the trail you've left behind you. Your trail will remain in the setting, so a miscalculated turn can cause you to crash into your own path and have to start over.
Plan every move carefully
To control your motorcycle, all you need to do is use the arrow keys. The objective is to reach all the people scattered throughout the level without crashing into any obstacles, although you can also collect coins and stars to score additional points and access bonus levels. The difficulty will keep increasing as you go: the motorcycle will move faster and faster, and the presence of mines will force you to make each move more and more carefully.
Over 30 increasingly demanding levels
Gridbike includes more than 30 levels in which both the number of people you must rescue and the amount of dangers present on the screen increase. On the most advanced levels, the combination of speed, mines, and your own trail will make it so you'll need to think several moves ahead in order to avoid running out of space.
My experience with Gridbike
Inevitably, playing Gridbike made me think of nineties arcades. Its approach is like a mix between the classic snake game from the old Nokia phones and the light cycles from Tron, featuring very easy-to-understand rules that become more and more complicated as the speed of the game increases.
The best and worst of Gridbike
• Being able to start playing practically instantly is what I like most about Gridbike, especially since it takes up less than 500 KB and offers a very direct arcade experience.
• That said, the level selector would be more convenient if it had a more practical design; right now, the way it works is a little cumbersome.
An arcade game just like those that came before it
With its simple visuals and a focus on reflexes and planning ahead, this game is especially suited to anyone looking for a classic-style arcade experience. Download Gridbike for Mac if you're drawn to the simple gameplay found in arcade games from the 90s.
