Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the ability of micro-organisms to survive or grow in the presence of an antimicrobial agent that normally inhibits or kills that micro-organism. AMR is one of the top global public health and development threats.
The EU is not alone in recognising the threat of AMR and is addressing it at the highest political level. Many countries beyond the EU, as well as international organisations, are also taking action to tackle this urgent global challenge.
To tackle AMR effectively, the European Commission coordinates extensive research initiatives, fosters collaboration between countries and industries, and has recently launched new partnerships under a comprehensive One Health approach.
