Three more metal Stargrave figures

These are the final three metal Stargrave figures from the Nickstarter;

From left to right they are a Hacker, a Rogue (or maybe a Veteran) and a Medic.

Once again, they are lovely sculpts with a lot of nice details and plenty of character.

I am seeing the Hacker as someone who has escaped from some Hive City on a ruined and polluted industrial world, probably on the run from the city's security forces or the agents of some mega-corporation whose systems she has penetrated to gain its secrets.

The Rogue or Veteran is an enigmatic figure, a survivor of many battles whose homeworld was destroyed in one final cataclysmic conflict between competing warlords. Now, a lone survivor of a warship's crew in a hostile sector of the galaxy, he lives on his wits, cutting dodgy deals and taking on contracts from whoever is prepared to pay, regardless of their legality or morality.

The Medic is another survivor, this time from some obscure Medical College or Order, maybe one whose aims were controversial and methods less than legal, leading to it being attacked and destroyed by militia forces of the local population, sick and tired of seeing their children and friends disappearing behind the forbidding walls of the Order's Fortress Hospital, never to emerge again. Yes, the Medic is a man with a shady past. Perhaps he seeks to atone for the scientific and medical atrocities in which he participated in the past? Or perhaps he still carries out secret experiments and is happy to carry out no-questions-asked illegal procedures so long as the price is right?

Two more Stargrave minis

Here are my second two Stargrave metal figures that were Nickstarter stretch goals.

These two are Mystics; a type of  character who might be a kind of Warrior Monk, a member of an ancient spiritual Militant Order or an initiate of a Post-Apocalyptic Cult.

They have unnatural powers that are different to those of Psionicists, derived from their ability to sense the underlying power of the universe around them and shape it to suit their purposes, whether for good or ill.

I see the figure on the left as a former knight of a Militant Order, still wearing their Order's armour, striving to bring some kind of law and justice to a wild and lawless galaxy. The figure on the right could be a cult initiate, someone whose world has been subjected to a near-total breakdown of society and who is searching for meaning and answers where none seem to exist, or perhaps a warrior monk, whose role is to hold back the forces of decay and destruction via a special emotional and spiritual oneness with the Cosmic All. Perhaps the overlap between cult member and monastic warrior is greater than many might think?

My first two minis for Stargrave

I signed up for the Stargrave Nickstarter (which is now over) a month or so ago and went in for the whole package. I've finally started painting things, starting with the stretch goal metal figures. Here are the first two I've completed.

These two are Psionicists (also called Psykers in other media). The figure on the left has a definite Bad Guy vibe about it/him/her (who knows?). I think it is the teeth, but let's not be too judgemental about their dentistry.

The female figure on the right could be a more neutral character. She doesn't give off the same sort of Dark Lord of the Sith aura.

I am really pleased with the whole green and purple scheme that I've used for both figures. I decided to keep their bases pretty simple, but you can't ever have bases that will work in every possible environment.

What the postman brought this time

I was expecting a box from Bad Squiddo, because I knew that Annie had shipped the Maze of Malcor Nickstarter, but I wasn't prepared for an explosion of PINK!!!!! when I opened the box. A gorgeous surprise. This was a couple of things that weren't in the parcel that I picked up when I saw Annie at Warfare.

And here they are - Ninjas and Onna-bugeisha with naginata and yumi, plus badges.

There were also the usual freebies in the box. I think the walking stick is going to go on the Christmas tree.

Then, underneath was all the Maze of Malcor stuff. First, the box of plastic female soldiers.

Then, the actual book.

And finally, a huge bag of shinies.

In that bag are the new female Thief, Barbarian, Knight, Templar, Apothercary, Markswoman and Tracker with with Warhound figures, plus a lot of new specifically Malcor goodies. There are five new Wizards and Apprentices, representing the new Schools of Magic; Sonancer, Astromancer, Distortionist, Fatecaster and Spiritualist.

There are also assorted monsters and creatures. These are as follows. There is an Acrisbird (a bit like a grumpy ostrich on steroids), a Banshee, a Bog-Man, a Coal-Man, a Collegium Porter (a kind of animated chest of drawers), Starfire Elementals, Glass Spiders, Shrieking Wolves, Phase Cats, Bloodwaves and a Mantodeus ( a sort of giant creepy-crawly). In addition there is a model for Malcor, accompanied by some Wraiths (his Advisory Council) and one for a Rangifer Shaman, plus the shades of four dead Wizards which were stretch goals for the Nickstarter. I think there was supposed to be a fifth one of these but the goal wasn't unlocked.

All in all, a huge amount of stuff to make up (there are lots of separate bits with some of these figures), prep and paint. Still, at least it will keep me busy after Christmas.

I can see lots of potential for these figures, apart from Frostgrave, and they are terrific models too.

The Maze of Malcor - a Nickstarter

This is excellent news for all of us who want more female miniatures for our games.

As Annie says on her Facebook page;

The Maze of Malcor Nickstarter IS NOW LIVE - and excellent news for you all - you can join in the pre-order program through Bad Squiddo Games - woohoo!

This is the extra monsters and encounters from the book, as well as PLASTIC FEMALE SOLDIERS, more troop and wizard types (female!) and some fancy token things.

What does this mean?
Basically you just buy it like any normal pre-order system. It will ship early December. The "starter" element is that the more people join in, the more freebies you get on top of what you've bought.

Will Bad Squiddo totals count towards this total?

Yep, every penny of Malcor bucks will be counted up weekly and sent to North Star to add their counter.

Why Bad Squiddo though?

Because we're cool! You get to support North Star, Osprey AND Bad Squiddo if you come through us. Also, as the leading company in Believable Female Miniatures, you can add even more to your new female Frostgrave force while you are here.

So I can add anything else from the shop at the same time?

Hells yes, do it!

Any other questions - go for it.

To find out more, and to order some terrific toys, just go HERE

I've already succumbed and ordered the lot, because it all looks so good I didn't want to miss out on anything.

Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago - the Postman Rang Once

I've been eagerly awaiting the postman today, because I was really hoping that my Ghost Archipelago Nickstarter would get delivered and, just before noon the doorbell duly rang. I'd had an email on Sunday from Annie at Bad Squiddo to say that it had been packed and sent, so it wasn't really that much of a surprise.

Anyway, what was in the box?

First off, I love the personalised Bad Squiddo postage sticker.

And here is Annie's personalised delivery note, the obligatory Gunny Pets and a complementary fruit tisane teabag. Thanks, Annie! I'll drink it later.

Now, on to the goodies. First, the rule book, the accessory pack and the book of Ghost Archipelago stories (for some bedtime reading!).

Then, there is the box of plastic crew figures, of which more later.

And the crew sheet, which I expect I'll have to scan and print off, so as not to deface the original.

Now, here are the shiny toys. Top left are the four female crew figures, who are lovely castings. Moving anti-clockwise, there is my chosen Heritor and Warden (I went for a female Stormwarden), the Pirate Queen (she is spectacularly good) with her pet giant iguana, who is clearly going to have to be called Iggy Pop, three one-off add-on figures from Northstar, five resin tokens and, in the centre a Bad Squiddo Ghost Archipelago badge. I've not cleaned the figures up, just trimmed off some of the more obvious bits of flash, but overall they are pretty clean castings and have bags of detail that will look brilliant once painted.

Next, here is the contents of the plastic 28mm crew box. Four sprues of bodies, heads, arms, weaponry and whatnots, which is what one would expect from a Frostgrave box. Plenty of opportunity here to create a characterful and hopefully unique crew for your games. There are also two sprues of 25mm diameter bases. There are plenty of weapons options; swords, axes, spears, bows, crossbows, club etc and some small buckler-style shields, plus quivers, pouches and other bits and pieces. I am rather drawn to creating an Arabian Nights styled crew, because that is the look of the metal female crew members too. Plenty of thinking is required here, though.

Almost at the end now, so here is the contents of the accessories box, the game cards and a special Blood Burn die for recording the decreasing health of your Heritor.

Last but not least, here is a sample of the excellent artwork in the rulebook. From an initial flick through, the art is of the usual high standard we have come to expect from Frostgrave.

So, what now? Should I get started on these, finish off my Congo miniatures or make a start on my "My Last Sunrise" Vampire Hunters and Undead and supernatural minis? The lead mountain grows apace .......................
