The construction industry is increasingly turning to mass timber, recognizing its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional materials like steel and concrete. Microsoft, in collaboration with Gensler and Thornton Tomasetti, is employing this sustainable material in an unexpected way, building two mass timber hyperscale data centers in Virginia using a hybrid cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction system that will reduce the embodied carbon of these structures by 35 percent compared to conventional steel construction, and 65 percent compared to typical precast concrete. These hybrid mass timber data centers — the first of their kind — are currently under construction and exemplify how design, engineering, and fabrication can work together to push forward the decarbonization of data center construction. https://lnkd.in/dZRRq9xn #MassTimber #DataCenters #Sustainability
