Ego Broken This album hugely rewards active listening with good equipment and high volume. A slow burn effort that rises and falls again through the first tracks until reaching an emotional climax with the title track, during which you perceive a certain sense of bliss before the final track takes you back into the rawest darkness decomposing right into your (damaged) ears.
A deeply rewarding journey that will leave you exhausted but wanting to start over... Favorite track: The Shattered Light.

about

Originally released in 2012 on my defunct Koen Music label, 'The Shattered Light' was my first solo album in five years. Played entirely on guitar utilising volume control, distortion pedals, two loopers and a bunch of tape machines and reel-to-reels, it took me over two years of writing and over one hundred takes to get this how I wanted. Eventually I handed this over to James Plotkin who sub-frequencied the daylights out of it to perfect effect.

The album was in development before my father's sudden passing in 2011 and the Tōhoku Earthquake prior to that. These events had a huge hold on my music making. The earthquake physically caused me to stop making music for a while as my studio was mostly wiped out so I decided to just play guitar from our house in the rice paddies with some old pedals that survived. My computer was busted up but this ended up freeing me musically, and around my long work hours I would spend my nights and weekends playing over and over again.

Everything changed when my father suddenly passed that same winter in challenging circumstances, and after a time between the UK and Japan torn by family needs and my own family life and work back in Japan, my guitar works took on a very different take. Wild, raw, unbridled and totally free to let go as I couldn't communicate my sadness or emotions verbally to anyone, I let rip at the heartbreak of it all, and the sheer anger I felt at the situation and impact it had on my entire family. The album is very much an expression of exhaustion, breaking and shattering of spirit in the face of death and what life means beyond.

On a personal level, it has some deep connections to my newest release 'Savage Modern Structures' which is itself a reflection on trauma but also renewal and a life to be lived beyond traumatic events. Both guitar-based albums aimed to create huge orchestral-noise soundscapes, they really were deeply cathartic to create and I'm so happy to present both alongside each other this winter.

Thank you

Note: both albums have full mix versions included.
