More Quilt Show Pictures

More pretty quilts ------

This is another 1/2" quilt!  This one may have put someone over the cliff!

Like Moda Block Heads Blocks - Week 18

About 1100 pieces in star, and about 11 hrs. quilting, per maker's description card.

Were they having a 1/2" challenge?  (Sorry; bad photo!)

This is the other one I had lost, made by my Best of Show Friend

Just have to add this one last one for Ruth of Country Log Cabin Quilts.  She has a Robin's nest just outside her window!  She just may want to make this quilt;  I love it!

There were many more beautiful quilts there at the show in Midlothian, Texas, last weekend; hope you enjoyed seeing these.  I surely enjoyed seeing them. Lots of great quilters in that area.

Guess I better go try to quilt!  These quilts make me feel very inadequate!

Quilt Show Pictures

I went to the Ellis County Texas Quilt Guild Show in Midlothian last Friday, with a quilting buddy and my DIL.  What a show it was!  One of my good friends from a nearby town won Best of Show with her Whole Cloth Hand Appliqued beauty!  Unfortunately it was up on the stage and so far back that I could not get a decent picture.  I did the best I could to get a portion of it; just trust me, her hand quilting is awesome, and worthy of the prize for sure!    She said it took her 1 1/2 years to finish it, and this is the second one she has made (one for each of her two sons).  It was a printed whole cloth kit by Holice Turnbow.  Wish I could have gotten a full picture.
(Double Click to enlarge)
She also had another quilt entered that won a blue ribbon.  (I had trouble taking pictures all day!)
She had one more beautiful quilt there, but I've misplaced the picture.

Another friend had some unbelievable quilts in the show too.  I think maybe she had lost her mind BEFORE she started this quilt of 3/4" pieces!  The area we normally would think of as background was also 3/4" pieces!

Then I met a lady who was looking at this quilt that was labeled as last year's Best of Show; of course, again I couldn't get a full picture because it was up on the stage.  It, too, was beautiful, hand appliqued and machine quilted.

My attention was drawn to two more quilts that same lady had made; they too are amazing!
The first one is made from silk ties, and Elvis is in the top clam shell.

That same lady also made this next one; it is truly awesome!  Her description says it has 10,528 pieces in the center, plus the applique borders.

If these quilts were all I had seen, I would have had a quilt feast!  But there are more I really want to share; I don't know any of the makers; I just like them!

I fear if I include them in this post, it will be overloaded.  So I'm going to make a second post behind this one with more pictures.  Again, no explanations, etc.; just pictures!  So be sure to see that post too,  titled More Quilt Show Pictures.

Enjoy!

Week 19 Block Heads Block

This has been a very busy week, and my quilting time was gobbled up by it.

Monday I did work on my Family Rules panel, but that was about it.

Tuesday a new roof was put on my house as a result of the hail storm back in April.  I had to get up at 6 AM --- not my regular schedule for sure!

Wednesday I was up again at 6 AM to work in my rose garden before it got too hot, and then I cooked for and helped with another funeral dinner.

Thursday I was back in the rose garden about 7:30 AM, (believe me this is NOT going to become a habit!), and I finally got all the grass and weeds under control.  It looks so much better, even though the rose bushes are looking a little weary with the 100 degree weather!  I was about worn out from the hours out there too!  Of course, anyone else could have done what I did in less than half the time I spent out there on the two days.  My son and DIL came over late so he could mow the grass, and of course, I cooked supper for them.

Friday I was on the way to a quilt show at 8 AM with a friend and my DIL.  I would have slept in until later except for that!  It was a really good show!  However, I was really tired when we got home.  I will try to show some of the pictures tomorrow hopefully.

Today, Saturday, I did sleep in until 8:45 AM, and it was so nice!  Then I got the laundry started, read a lot of blogs, and just took the day easy.  I did get the binding sewn on the Family Rules panel, and almost half of it whipped down.  Then I got my Block Heads Week 19 block made.  It took longer to decide on the fabrics than it did to make it.  I decided to use my Eleanor Burns Flying Geese Ruler, which I love because they always come out perfect, and much easier for me than the no waste method.   I like the way the block turned out. (Looks like there's a slight reflection in the center of the third row in the solid blue fabric.)

Next post will have some of my favorites at the quilt show; maybe tomorrow.

More Belated Thoughts on July 4, 2017

This is too late for a July 4 project, I know, but this is the best I could do this year; don't really know why.  Just didn't get into it!  However, yesterday I finished my Block Heads Week 16 block, and today I finished my Week 18 block.  I'm fairly happy with the way they both turned out.

I must admit I cheated a bit on Week 16. You know how I dread applique.  Well, while selecting my fabrics, I came across this bit of red/white stripes, little skinny stripes!  When I measured it against the pattern, 13 stripes measured exactly what the pattern did.  Eureka!  That will work perfectly! Thirteen stripes is exactly what our flag has, and I won't have to applique those few stripes in the pattern!   Then I found the navy with stars; not perfect, but it will suit me!  So I appliqued the navy onto the stripes.  I had a hard time with the top of the flag poles, but hey, the block is finished!
Block Heads Week 16
Actually the most difficult part of the block for Week 18 was fabric selection for the center block, but when I discovered the little heart would fit, the rest was easy.  It made me happy to be caught up again, until next Wednesday.
Block Heads Week 18
Can those count for my 2017 patriotic additions?  I hope so.

Ruth of Country Log Cabins asked if I still have a quilt I made a few years back, and I do; this is it.  Ruth, it is hanging on the wall over the cedar chest in the sunroom, and I didn't see it when I took the other pictures in my last blog.  It really is one of my favorites.  I used my Curvemaster foot to piece the Drunkard's Path blocks.

"The Wave Salute" from the June-July 2009 issue of "Quilt" magazine
 (minus the applique stars)
While looking that one up, I came across several more posts of  my patriotic quilts, and I think I'll just show a few more from the past.  I took these pictures of quilts out this year, but made years back.
My own creation, except the quotation

Given to my BFF (Wish I could still write as well.}

If you are still with me after all those, I'd like to take you back to my personal favorites of all the patriotic quilts I've ever made, or ever will, I'm sure.  That will be another long read, so be forewarned.  You can read it  here .  (Thanks to all of you who made comments on that post; wish I knew how to delete them just for this post, but I don't.)

At the time I came up with the idea for those quilts, I was very concerned for our nation.  I must say I'm still very concerned for our nation, for many of the same reasons, and for many new and different reasons.  Somehow, things have just got to change.  I keep going back to II Chronicles 7:14, and "The Big IF", another quilt I felt led to create.  You can read about it again here .  Again, thanks for the comments there; I don't know how to delete them from the link.  I wish I had bought this one back at the auction!

Now with that one, I'll close this rant, and just say July 4 was still very important to me in 2017; I just didn't say so in a timely fashion this year.  Anyway, I now have my favorite patriotic quilts referenced in one place, right? *giggle*

If you read all this, go get some eye drops and then go rest your eyes!

Okay, I'm Behind Again, But I Have Been Busy!

PROCRASTINATION - a word my 8th grade teacher wrote on the blackboard the first day of school.  He turned to the class and asked if anyone knew the meaning of the word; no one did.  He then said, "It is something I will NOT tolerate!"  Then he explained the definition, and then said that when he gave us an assignment, he expected us to get started immediately and have it completed when we returned to class the next day.  He further said that procrastination causes people of all ages more trouble than almost anything else in life.  I never realized that day how true that statement was, and still is!  I will never forget the lesson he taught our class that day, and neither will any of my classmates; someone always mentions it when we get together.  Yet I find myself doing just that almost every day.

When I'm faced with something I cannot do well, I procrastinate!  Such is the case with  Block Heads Week 16 block; applique is not my best technique!  So I've been procrastinating since it came out, but I'm glad I got Week 17 finished anyway.  Okay, I'll catch up before long --- maybe.  Of course, Week 18 comes out tomorrow!  My excuse is that I've been busy!  Really I have.  I have had other things on my mind.  To prove it, just look at this picture.  It is a flimsy already, and pretty big too!

Last blog post I was in a stew trying to decide what to do with the panel, the log cabin blocks I had made, and the fabric I had left.  That is what I decided to do.  It is too large for a throw now,  (76" x 62"), so  I will put a black border around the quilt; in fact, I went to the quilt store yesterday and bought more than enough black fabric.  The fabric of the longest strip (looks like tooled leather; sorry I didn't get a closeup) in each block is used up, which limits me on making more blocks, but that's okay.  At least it's used up!  I'll try to get a closeup when it's quilted so you can see the fabrics better.

I decided to keep the panel (hanging behind and to the left of the quilt) with its checkerboard border that size, no larger (51" x 33").  I'll put a sleeve on it, and it can be hung in the same room with the quilt.  I decided that will be better than putting the panel in the middle of the quilt.    "Family Rules" need to be observed and practiced, not slept under!   That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.  I fear I'll be procrastinating again before I get both projects quilted.  Here it is again; it will stay this size.

I have some other things to take care of along the way, but I hope to get both quilted before long.  Just remember, I'm old and very slow!

Now about all the fabric I didn't buy last week-end.  My quilting buddy wanted me to go with her last Friday to the closing sale, so I did.  I got lots of practice on restraint!  She carried out five big heavy bags of fabric; I had only two smaller ones.
All are 1 yard except the red kiddy and 2 pink florals; those are 2 yds. each; all is Moda.
Then she called after church Sunday and asked me to go back with her, and I confess I went!  This time she hauled out more than she did Friday, saying she was going to share it with her sister.  Yeah, right!  Again, I got a few more yards and some patterns (that I'll probably never get around to making).  Included is 6.5 yards brown backing fabric on the bolt for the panel and log cabin quilt I'm working on.
Again all 1 yard, except 6.5 yards  brown backing on bolt

Yes, I know the panel and quilt are black and white, and the backing fabric is brown.  However, the black(ish) fabrics have cowboy-like markings such as tooled leather, cow hide, and burlap.  The brown backing has black designs similar to bandannas that cowboys sometimes wear.  (Come on now; use your imagination!)  My reasoning was that black fabric catches every little bit of lint, dust, or whatever, and white shows any and all kinds of soil!  The brown will maybe hide whatever a cowboy brings in the house after roping and working cattle!    Since the quilt has grown quite a bit the past two weeks, I hope I bought enough of the brown backing!  I've checked it pretty close, and I think I did.

You probably are thinking I made some weird fabric choices, and maybe I did.  I needed some Civil War background fabrics, and I'm hoping some of these will work.  I'm guessing  a lot of it has been in their warehouse a long time, but it is all in excellent shape, and was on the original bolts.  I had to go buy more plastic tubs to store all the sale fabric in so it will still be in good shape for whoever gets it when I die!  I'm pretty sure I won't live long enough to use it all up!  But I just could not pass up Moda at $3 to $5 per yard!

Then last Thursday, an anonymous person gifted me and two quilting buddies with several big bags of fabrics, mostly scraps, but a few large, really nice pieces.  We were told to choose what we wanted from the bags.  Here's what I chose, or the others chose for me:
The large blue piece has 5 yards; and will work as Civil War backing maybe;
the cowboy piece has almost 2 yards,
and the patriotic piece has a little more than 1 yard;
All the others are scraps, but I can use some of them.
Speaking of death a couple of paragraphs up, my next-door neighbor passed away last week.  He had been in the hospital six weeks, and his sweet wife never left his room the entire time.  When she got home from the hospital that afternoon,  she came over to tell me.  I laid my piecing aside,  and made a big pot of potato soup, and a batch of cookies for her and their two adult daughters.  The girls have been going back and forth to work and the hospital, but she really never left his room the entire six weeks!  I don't know how she did it.  She appears to have lost about 30 pounds.  I knew there was nothing in her house to eat that night, and I thought soup would be easier on her tummy.  They are all worn out, and very sad.  We have been neighbors since 1978 when I moved here.  He always said to me when he saw me, "How you doin', Old Lady?"  The younger daughter said the same thing to me one afternoon; brought a tear to my eyes, and hers too.  I'm sure that's how she will greet me from now on.  They all will miss him so much; so will I.  His funeral was last Saturday morning, and I've never witnessed  a sweeter funeral service, ever.

I had a good time with my son, his wife, and her parents tonight.  He grilled hamburgers, she had all the fixings, and I took cookies, brownies, and cantaloupe.  Everything was really good.  I got home in time to watch the fireworks on TV; I wanted to get home (about 20 miles) before it was really dark. They were going to watch the local fireworks show.

Hope all of you had a wonderful July 4 as you celebrated our freedom.

Tomorrow I MUST clean house a bit!  Then maybe I can get the panel sandwiched, and maybe start on my Week 6 block.

God Bless America!

Just can't let the day go by without wishing everyone a Happy July 4 today.  Hope you are having a fun day with family and friends.  I'm going to my son's later this afternoon; he's grilling hamburgers!

For several years it was my practice on July 4 to make or at least finish a patriotic table topper or wall hanging.  As I looked back to see what I had posted last year, I could not believe that I did not post anything red, white and blue!  I guess I was just so involved in that big Civil War quilt, I just didn't have anything new to post.  I did find a couple of pictures that I can post this year though they were both made in the past couple of years.  I guess surely I posted them somewhere sometime, but I haven't found them yet.  So here they are today.
In true fashion, this one wants to wave a bit!  Label says it was made October, 2015.

This is perhaps my favorite panel of all time.  Made July 2015, according to the label.
And how much we do need God's blessing on our nation today!
Some of you may remember the beautiful rose picture made and sent to me
by Liri in Pennsylvania, from our APQ bloggin' buddies days.   I miss her posts!
I really have been busy lately, and will have proof to show you soon, maybe later today or tomorrow for sure.  Just don't have time right now to get it together to post.  So be sure to check back later or tomorrow.

Last night I did get my Block Heads Week 17 block made.  It will have to do for my 2017  July 4 project.  Still have to make Week 16 with the flags.

Block Heads - Week 17
Have a fun and safe holiday!
