Short medical translations

Short medical translations Wikiproject Medicine over at the English Wikipedia has been working hard since 2011 together with Translators Without Borders, in order to translate high quality medical content into over 100 different languages. In 2014 we also started translating into a larger number of languages, as well as trying to get smaller simplified articles out there faster. The idea is to translate the lede or introduction, and any article that is translated has to be checked so that it is correct by at least one medical doctor. Currently we need integrators and assistance in reaching out to see which articles should be translated, and which shouldn't. If you want to help out and categorize articles as Do translate or Don't Translate head over to : WP:RTT simple. Feature – Ebola articles

During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

Some more stats

• In July, 18 full article translations went live (WP:RTT), and an additional 6 simplified versions went live (WP:RTTS)!
• We have a number of new lead integrators into Dutch, Polish, Arabic and Bulgarian, with more to come in smaller languages! (Find them here old sign up page)
• We were mentioned in a Global Voices Online report by Subhashish Panigrahi at Doctors and translators are working together to bridge Wikipedia's medical language gap
• New medical professionals have started, dedicated to working in Odiya and Kinyarwanda!

New sign-up page for the Medical Translation Project

Hey!

This is a friendly reminder that the sign-up page at the Medical Translation Project (previously Translation Task force) has been updated. This means everyone has to sign up again. Using the new page it will be easier for us to get into contact with you when there is work available. Please check out our progress pages now! There might be work there already for you.

We are also very proud to introduce new roles and guides which allows people to help who don't have medical knowledge too!

Here are ways you can help!

Community organization

We need involved Wikipedians to engage the community on the different Wikipedias, and to spread the word!

Assessing content

We need language knowledgeable Wikipedians (or not yet Wikipedians) who indicate on our progress tables which articles should and should not be translated!

Translating

We are always on the look-out for dedicated translators to work with our content, especially in smaller languages!

Integration

Translated articles need to be integrated into local Wikipedias. This process is done manually, and needs to take merge or replace older articles.

Template installation

For translations to be more useful templates and modules should be installed. We need people with the technical know-how who can help out!

Programming

Several of our processes are in need of simplification and many could occur automatically with bots.

  • Finished performance improvements for badges

  • Pietro from the EAGLE project came to visit us, one of the first 3rd party users of Wikibase. See http://www.eagle-network.eu
  • Added a hook point to allow 3rd party users (like the EAGLE project) of Wikibase to control what goes into the search index
  • Started work on a widget that lets you edit badges right in the item instead of going to the special page
  • Use checkboxes instead of a multiselect to edit badges on d:Special:SetSiteLink
  • Work on hhvm-related issues in Wikibase and temporarily disabled the beta feature on Wikidata until fixes are deployed for the issues.

Grazie.

Ti ringrazio, su quella voce ho lavorato mesi, e sono piuttosto orgoglioso del risultato. Per quanto riguarda il problema della classificazione oncologica, è davvero un bel casino, anche a livello di pubblicazioni specializzate. Il modo in cui hanno affrontato la cosa sulla enwiki forse è efficace dal punto di vista divulgativo, ma è abbastanza discutibile dal punto di vista medico. E comunque anche all'interno delle specializzazioni mediche non c'è grande uniformità. Tocca accettare compromessi, ed è difficile capire qual'è la soluzione meno scorretta. Oltretutto, sapendo che presto molto cambierà. Comunque hai fatto bene a segnalare il problema. Purtroppo, l'impressione è che siamo davvero in pochi a lavorare qui (ed io sono un saltuario, lavorando anche su voci di altri progetti). Non amo le guerre e qui se ne sta consumando una. Adesso si aggiungono e si tolgono parti (come gli Off-topic, che avevo inserito per non appesantire la pagina di discussione di cuore). Mi si rinfacciano attacchi personali etc..., quando in realtà non si ha l'umiltà necessaria per portare avanti un confronto leale. In più si aggiungono altri utenti, che di voci mediche hanno esperienza quanto io ne ho dell'ingegneria spaziale, a supportare tesi di incompletezza della voce e a esprimere parere contrario all'inserimento in vetrina. Facciamo così, consideriamola eccezione e lasciamola centrale, anche per me non c'è problema. Approfitto però per segnalarti che l'impostazione a paragrafetti indentati della sezione Sport, (da me adeguata) purtroppo potrebbe non avere le caratteristiche richieste attualmente dalle linee guida, come evidenziato dalla modifica di Bultro o da questo rollback. Pertanto essendo questa una voce in vetrina presa ad esempio dagli utenti forse si dovrebbe adeguare la sezione al modello di stile attuale, visto che la discussione attinente al momento sembra insabbiata. Ho impostato da modello di voce. La foto dello stadio la lascerei a destra, si impagina meglio. Vediamo se riusciamo a concludere questa permanenza in vetrina. A tal proposito ti propongo di togliere il grafico dell'evoluzione demografica dal 1472 al 1862 adeguando a quanto richiesto dal modello, anche perchè con schermo vecchio non 19:9 sborda fuori,(fortunatamente ho la possibilità di verificare 4 tipi di risoluzione). Postilla tecnica

C'è una cosa che non riesco a comprendere di tutto quello che sta accadendo sulla voce cuore (e metti da parte la mio opinione sulla nomenclatura delle voci perché è una domanda logistica-organizzativa): perché il titolo non è già stato modificato? Cioè sono giorni che si discute su questa faccenda, ma cambiare il titolo della voce in "Cuore (anatomia umana)" non risolverebbe tutti i problemi? Farlo metterebbe in difficoltà la procedura di segnalazione? Elio Baldoni

Come ho già riportato nella pagina specifica ti chiedo cortesemente il motivo del dubbio sulla rilevanza enciclopedica di Elio Baldoni. Da come si può evincere nelle fonti correttamente indicate nella pagina il personaggio è stato, tra l'altro, il fondatore di una branca della geriatria italiana (la geriatria pratica), ed è considerato tra i padri della medesima specialità nonché uno tra i primi geriatri in Italia. Non può essere quindi semplicemente considerato un buon medico esperto e attivo nel sociale. E mi pare che rispetti i criteri di enciclopedicità previsti. Peraltro la pagina, che contribuisco ad aggiornare appena dispongo di fonti obiettive, esiste da diverso tempo senza aver mai suscitato dubbi in merito --Opj75 (msg) 21:46, 25 ott 2014 (CET)

Le immagini sono mie personali e non sono state fatte dalla università di Verona, ma presso la ditta QR di Verona. L'università non ha mai collaborato per la ricerca. Hai rimosso i nomi degli sviluppatori e il riconoscimento dato a Genova, perchè? Verifica nel sito di QR... Pessima Wikipedia.. Italia

Mi sono trovato benissimo sul sito Madre.. qui e' un delirio. Ci sono alcune persone che gli sono stati i bollini e si sentono di poter bullizzare e attaccare. Si tratta di persone che vivono 24 ore davanti al pc e che non hanno un vero lavoro, e' impossibile dialogare con persone che hanno problemi seri a livello di neutralita' ovviamente. Si sentono sceriffi ma non hanno alcuna vera autorita' anche perche' siamo in Italia.. ricordo che siamo fuori dal G8 e che la fama infausta e ridicola ci precede in qualsiasi paese dpsi vada. Wikipedia e' uno strumento utile in nazioni civilizzate non in un'Italia che a liberta' di stampa e' al 73o posto prima della Tanzania e non e' uno scherzo. I'm out of here. Grazie per lo spazio.

  • Past: Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing) spoke about authority control in Wikidata (and sister projects) at the World Digital Library's Arab Peninsula Regional Group Symposium, organised in conjunction with the Qatar National Library, in Doha on 13 May. His slides, with an Arabic translation, will be online soon.

• Other Noteworthy Stuff
  • Elections for the board of the Wikimedia Foundation are ongoing. Wikidata should be well represented among the voters. Go and vote!

  • Dutch Wikipedia and French Wikisource now have the arbitrary access feature. Persian Wikipedia, English Wikivoyage and Hebrew Wikipedia are following today. Italian Wikipedia and all remaining Wikisource projects are following on June 1st.
  • New manual for adding inventory numbers to paintings on Wikidata
  • English Wikipedia is running a bot to add authority control templates to many articles that are filled completely from Wikidata. Italian Wikipedia is doing so as well.
