Hey, I like your game nd it has a lot of potential, but the main issue i have with this is the camera it follows the player slowly and because of that the main cause of death i found was because i couldn't see where i was going and this becomes frustrating since it sends you to the beggining of the game.
normally, in a sidescroller the camera wil be in front of the character and show more of the screen of where you are going and hide where you've been since i.
Other than that, level design wise, you made interesting and fun choices with the bouncers and some gaps, I'd recommend you raise some ceilings (For example in the area where the first spike dropped) so that the player doesn't bonk it's head against the wall.
It's a good proof of concept for a jam so good job.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.
Tbh I myself was not sure about the camera movement. I wanted to do it again but decided against due to time constraints.
Level design I agree still does need a lot of work and I could absolutely make it better.
I will definitely change/improve the camera for a post jam update, and do better level design.
I appreciate your feedback, thank you.
I had a lot of fun! Even though it has that classic platformer vibe, I really enjoyed the theme and the 'meow' mechanic. I’m not sure I used it correctly, but it was still a great experience. Congrats!
Thank you for Playing, I Appreciate it a lot.
The meow mechanics was just there to be there, I'm glad you had fun.
Thank you
I caught the mouse on my last life! The camera movement makes it difficult at times, like during the elevator or the first bridge jump, but the animations for the characters were charming - especially the cat bopping during its idle animation. It was worth the 5 minutes!
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
The camera movement needs to be fixed. I'll get to it. I've fixed the first bridge for the post jam update it should now be further away.
Appreciate you playing it.
I basically had the exact same feedback about the game that Nathaniel has listed out. I also didn’t really feel it did justice to the theme but that’s okay. It was cute and I had fun. It did surprise me that after all that practice I was actually able to capture the mouse way before the elevator. But I see that was deliberate to keep difficulty low, so fair enough. I guess some more mechanics would have also been nice to see because right now its basically just a generic platformer, albeit a charming one.
Yeah, I'm also not exactly sure if it fits the theme well enough or not. I guess I could've added the dialogue in the opening saying that unless you catch the rat your lives loop and catching the rat ends the loop.
This was my first hand at any sort of platformer.
I am going to add some more mechanics to it If I work on it again and make everything look better and have better level design.
Appreciate the feedback.
Sounds great. Good luck!
You asked for feedback on the game page, so here are the things I would suggest changing:
1) move the first pit trap a bit more to the right - because of how the camera moves with the scene transition, I found it hard to smoothly dodge this trap, even though I knew it was coming (it seems the best time to hit space is as the camera is moving, but instinctually I wait for the camera to finish moving, and then it's too late):
2) keep the camera with the player on the elevators - I thought I hit a random bug when the camera suddenly jumped;
3) make the elevators more visually distinct from regular platforms - there was no suggestion that the elevator wasn't just another platform, or that I should expect something different to happen;
4) similarly, either make all the white platforms bounce, or make the final one look different - they all look the same, so it feels a bit frustrating when your rhythm is thrown off because the last one doesn't bounce for some reason.
Other than that, good job.
It's nice cute little game.
:)
Really appreciate the honest feedback thank you.
I agree I should probably move the first platform a bit to the right that's a mistake since I knew it was there and didn't really consider player's response about that.
Tbh that elevator is what took the most time for me, I really wanted to change the camera mechanics just for that but that would've meant changing the whole game's camera.
I absolutely should add distinction to the platforms that have different mechanics.
Liked the cat animation and the vibes were nice :)
First off, the meow made me genuinely laugh out loud, love it, was a bit on the quiet side though! The game is a bit harsh and i'm bad at this, but maybe reduce the size of the hitbox, i had a couple of deaths where i was fairly sure i didn't hit the spikes. The artwork i love, but maybe figure something out to make certain elements a bit more visible, i died a lot on the first collapsing platform. Love the mood and lighting effects. Overall a fun little game, i enjoyed it!
Appreciate it.
I sadly couldn't get any cat meows in the game(I did that one myself to the best of my abilities)
The spike hit boxes I will change for the post jam build, I did change them, but then forgot that I had and didn't push that update.
I think I probably will add parallax environment. This was my first hand at doing any sort of passable art so next I'll try to make it better.
Thanks for playing.
that actually makes the meow better! The style was cool i didn't miss parallax backgrounds tbh.
If not parallax then problem better detailed environment ig
pretty good short cute game
i managed to catch the rat! Love this game
Thank You For Playing...
I finally caught the rat, there's a small glitch near the elevator. It teleports your camera up, but if you jump off the camera stays up and you don't see the cat for a few seconds. Other then that it's really fun. I like the unique message you get for every death (yes I died more then 9 times)
I'm aware of that bug, I started focusing on the other stuff by the end so I couldn't fix that.
Thank you for playing, I'll definitely get it fixed in the post jam update I hope
I caught it pretty fast, 16 seconds
also i love the cat walk and idle animation, looks like its bopping to the beat :D
also i tried to refresh the page when i lost my first life and i was very surprised when it somehow remembered how much health i had left (6 lives)
But it ended too quick i think. will play more later to see if theres more levels (i might have caught it too early to see anything more)
Very nice!
Thank you for playing.
Yeah the game has player prefs in it so it should remember your death count as long as your browser sessions is the same.
The game can end as early or as late as possible, I made it super easy for this jam so people can atleast finish it even if they end it earlier then intended
good challanging game , i really like death nots and the Cat
short and sweet, good job
