I imagined a village sitting on a shooting star travelling through the galaxy. The island is full of wonders, and as it races among the stars, there is something epic about it. So I composed this music as orchestral music for the epic aspect. And I added celesta, piano and harp for the wonder aspect. This is the first time I've composed music with so many instruments, trying as much as possible to respect the way instruments overlap in orchestral music. In fact, I didn't include a brass section because I felt it weighed down the composition.

Fits the theme solidly. The amount of effort to make so many tracks for this, very impressed.
Gave you an itch follow, if you like the thing(s) on my page(s), consider doing the same.
Cheers!

Very nice track! I think it fits very well the star town theme
Another good work from the legend. This reminds me a lot of “Running Through the New World” from Kirby and the forgotten land, at least to me the melody and instrumentation sound similar.
Also the piano ending is cute.
Hey there! Long time no see! Glad to see you again :)
A classical Selkione masterpiece! I totally get everything you wrote down: the epic aspect using orchestral element and strong chords, as well as the starry night aspect using the celesta, piano, harp, and - I would think so - flute. I think its wonderful how you create a theme and use it consistently throughout the song but in different dynamics - sometimes strongly and epic, sometimes sweet and peaceful. It feels like the start of an adventure, like the moment you start exploring the skies in Mario Galaxy.
I also love to read that you're pushing yourself out of your comfort by incorporating so many instruments. I can genuinely say that I think you did a great job. It feels really smooth and well-polished. And I gotta say, daring chord/note you use at 1:38! It is a note out-of-key, in between two notes in the key: a chromatic stepwise downward motion! It definitely caught my attention, and was on the edge of being a bit weird - and for that reason, I already love that you tried it :D. That's creativity: daring to try!
I'm very happy to hear a song from you again :). I remember loving your songs from the very first Town Music Jam - a time where I met a lot of people who I see back in this jam! You have an ability beyond most other, with a creativity in songs like 'The Elevator of Love' (from the ninth Nitro Music jam) or the time-bending 'Cola Verde' (from the Enemy Encounter jam), and a way of capturing a theme so pristine like your 'Diplodotown' (from the third Town Music jam) or the 'Giant Slimy Dragon' (in the second Enemy Encounter jam). Your songs have a certain 'you'-factor which I have fallen in love with.
Sorry for making such a long post haha! Call it excitement ;). I can't WAIT to hear what you make next week. I just know it'll be great - no pressure ;D
Oh btw! Fun idea of putting this song in the 'Town Music Album', as it is of course a town theme. I would recommend, however, to temporarily turn the other songs in this album off and prevent them from being seen. I already see that exedexes mistakenly assumed that each of those songs was a submission for this jam, and I've seen that same mistake happen once to my album too.
I wonder if we'll see a "character-theme album" soon? ;)
Wow, thank you so much for your message! 🥰 It truly warms my heart to see how much time and care you put into listening to my musics and writing such a detailed and enthusiastic reply. Knowing that you enjoy what I compose is a huge motivation for me, and you’re definitely one of the reasons I keep joining these music jams.
I’m also really happy to see that you finished in such an excellent place this time — you absolutely deserve it! And now I can’t wait to hear your next piece, especially with those exotic time signatures you can use. That’s going to be so exciting.
Thanks again for your support and kindness, it really means a lot to me! 🙏✨
Very well composed and pleasant to listen to, great job! My only minor gripe is with the instrumentation feels a bit bland, which is not necessarily a bad thing but it holds back the starry and shooting star vibe to the track.
As for the bland side, I think I know what you mean. I have a tendency to superimpose melodies (main melody, counterpoint, secondary melody). As this was my first orchestral piece, I wanted to try the technique of octaves and harmonies (and therefore to limit counterpoints) which can result in a more direct and less rich music.
You learn by doing, and your opinion makes me think I should have used more counterpoint :)
Thank you for your constructive feedback !
wonderful job with the composition. i thoroughly enjoyed it. fits the theme well
Thank you for listening, commenting, rating and especially for appreciating
The composition and orchestration of this very much sound like we're ready for a video game adventure! From the opening chords, to the A theme with its differently orchestrated variations, to the B section changing things up, the journey of the music hints at adventure around every corner. A story with a beginning, a middle, and then... 100 hours more of playtime.
The way you orchestrated the strings especially hits genre conventions and works to create the feel. Legato, staccato, and pizzicato all used appropriately to keep up the momentum and change up the texture. And despite the variety of chords and moving parts, harmonically it's very well put together with no awkward dissonances or holes. This sounds like it was made by someone who has spent more than a little time studying music theory.
I did find that for myself, the AI art initially killed the vibe and didn't set me up to expect music that's made by hand by someone who knows what they're doing. Usually I wouldn't have clicked on this. But I saw the discussion in the discord so I decided to give it a try.
Haha 100 of playtime, you made me laugh with that one.
Anyway, I'm glad it sounds like such a game to you.
Yes, I've spent hours on YouTube eating up music theory and trying to figure out how to orchestrate properly. I'm happy to read that too.
Your feedback on the Ai image is very interesting. And if it's repulsive to you, it must be to others. You've convinced me to stop it :)
you say it’s the first time you’ve composed with so many instruments which is wild because your songs always feel so full and deep.
I like that there is a clear and distinct motif in the song which makes it feel welcoming whenever it plays which fits the town theme.
You're right, I used to have a lot of instruments, but orchestral music has a peculiarity: many instruments are monophonic.
So if you want to make a chord, you put the fifth on the flute, the third on the oboe, the root on the clarinet, and the bassoon an octave lower.
And you do it again with the string section (unless they're in unison, but it won't be the same octave).
In short, it takes a lot more planning than just picking up a nice synth and slapping on a chord.
Anyway, thanks for your support and feedback :)
This is amazing! It sounds like a start town SO MUCH, I would not be surprised if I heard this in an actual game. The orchestral instrumentation almost reminds me of mario galaxy a little^^
Really well done, the composition is awesome too! Keep it up :)
Thank you so much for the compliments!
I had Super Mario Galaxy in mind, but the OST was far away (I hadn't listened to it in years).
After composing it, I went and listened to it to see if there were any passages that sounded like plagiarism, but in the end there weren't. No copies, just inspiration. No copying, just inspiration :)
Thats exactly how it should be☺️
This is gorgeous! Once again, I wouldn't even need to know the theme, you painted the star town so clearly. This style of a light-hearted RPG sound for a town theme is my favorite type of video game music. Excellent work, yet again and thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your comment. You are one of the people whose work I admire (I remember your excellent second place finish at the OST jam). So it's nice to receive compliments from you.
um... is this ai?
Certainly not! Selkione is a very skilled composer and has major talent for conveying the exact emotions and feelings that they intend. The polished nature of the music is a staple quality of all of Selkione's music.
i was talking abt the art, idk if it is but it feels like ai to me.
The cover is based on my drawing but it has been enhanced by AI
Here's a screenshot of my DAW :)
For the cover, I'm going to go back to creating it by hand to avoid any confusion.
Thanks for asking.
Afterwards, I'd love to hear your thoughts on my music.
sure, i'm limited in my ability to talk abt orchestral music because i've never made any before but, i like how the marimbas sound like twinkles and its open hopeful atmosphere fits the star vibe. and over all it sounds like something i would hear in a modern video game so i think it fits well
