Fond Memories. . .

Recently an iconic woman from my home town of Pleasant Grove passed away.

Phyllis Thompson was a very fun loving and sweet lady who was adored by everyone that Knew her.

Growing up as a teenager I had her as one of my ‘mutual’ leaders. That’s what Young Women's was called back then. She was wonderful and I have such fond memories of her.

Last week I went to an estate sale at her home. It was fun to walk through it with my sister Jeanne. I recalled having been there when we were teens.

I purchased a few items that I know will bring me fond memories of Phyllis.

I loved this pop up Spring scene!

These people look so happy to be going to church. This was so ideal because Mrs. Thompson made church enjoyable for us. We were converts and I can’t say that was the case with everyone. Jeanne, remember mean old Mrs. Williams? Ha-Ha! You know, looking back she probably really wasn’t mean.  I think that she was just senile. We didn’t attend real regularly and all she ever did was just make us introduce ourselves every time.  This was very embarrassing for a young girl and it made me not like her at all! Nope, not one bit!!

I absolutely had to have this turquoise hob nob little sugar and creamer!

Cute, cute little pop up story book.

Pop ups just kept popping up.

These sparklers looked vintage to me.

I bought these colored bottles thinking I would give some to my daughters.

After grouping them together I loved how they looked so I put them in my bathroom. Sorry girls, better luck next time.

Phyllis Thompson will surely be missed, but I will cherish my finds and think of her whenever I look at them.

Smalls

Mike and Frank from the show “American Pickers” refer to smaller items that they pick as SMALLS.

Last weekend I went to St. George for the Home Shows. The homes were not near as good as usual, but I found a few smalls.

Here are my D.I. treasures.

IMG_0663

A pair of vintage hen & rooster salt and pepper shakers. They even had their stoppers. Now that’s something to crow about!

IMG_0659

I found this in one of the specialty cases. It was standing up and at first I thought that it was a toy stove. When I had it taken out to look at I realized that It is a child’s accordion. SWEE-EE-EET! Guess what? It really works. Best find of the day, I think!

IMG_0660

Wasn’t sure what I would do with this jar. Of course, I couldn’t pass it up, it’s turquoise! Just sat it on my fireplace hearth for now. Guess that this really wouldn’t be a smalls, maybe a mediums.

I didn’t find much at Urban Renewal. Now, that’s a first.

IMG_0664

I did buy this rustic pink metal pot. I love the weathered look.

IMG_0665

I took this pic so that you could see the scallop edge.

IMG_0662

Vintage tea cup and saucer. Sweet little turquoise flower.

We stopped in at T.J. Maxx and more. You can not go to St. George and pass up this store.

Wow, I was a good girl and did not buy much.

I spent $35 and my friend spent over $600. She bought a whole new bed ensemble and a bunch of pillows and accessories for her master bedroom and bathroom It is going to be so dang cute!

IMG_0661

This yellow bird just had to come home with me. I have a bird fetish! My friend, Joyce calls me the bird woman from Alcatraz.

IMG_0666

It was the twig basket that got my attention with this cute Easter décor.

I also bought a small garden étagère. Forgot to snap a pic so I will post it later when I place it in the garden.

Even though it rained all day Saturday, and the homes weren’t great. It was fun to see the 3 and 4 million dollar ones, (unreal). There was only 1 or 2 homes that had décor that I really liked.

Just getting away, spending time with friends, and finding my smalls (and a few mediums) made it worth the trip!

Better Things

I can hardly wait to tell you todays challenge so I can get on to bigger and better things.

Sorry, but I’m finding myself a bit bored with my recent posts.

I’m nice, but not that nice!

Geez Louise, I just realized that it’s only day 4. That means 10 more days to go. Oh, I can do it but I might just have to sneak in something a little more exciting now and then.

Day 4 Challenge: Kiss your sweetie before you say ‘goodnite’

DSCF0368

My hubby and I have done a lot of wrong things in our 38 years of marriage.

One thing that we’ve done right is we kiss each other before going to sleep each night and before he leaves for work in the morning.

It’s as habitual as brushing my teeth. I’d be out of sorts if it didn’t happen.

Now that’s done I must share with you my latest.

Not to say that kissing isn’t a good thing – there’s nothing quite like a good kiss!

I went to get a hair cut yesterday, didn’t happen; but then that’s a whole other story.

Found a few finds in ‘The Emporiums’ gift shop.

IMG_0575

Look at this pillow sporting my favorite color, red. I adore the muslin trailing flowers. So dang cute!

IMG_0577

Also found this wreath to match. It has a burlap base which put a pounding in my heart.  You’d  think I was raised in a potato sack.  My hairdresser, Shalona is a very creative woman.

Now with the purchase of my new treasures my latest dilemma is, “Where am I going to hang that wreath?”

Only my hairdresser knows for sure. :)

Found Treasures

Our Get Away to St. George was just what the Dr. ordered. It may have only been 51 degrees, but that was a heck of a lot warmer than here in Alpine. The only problem is, it felt like Spring and I came home with a bad case of Spring Fever!

DSCF0313

Finding this turquoise rake at my favorite store “Urban Renewal” certainly got me yearning for some Spring clean-up. I also found this vintage sewing machine. It’s hard to tell, but it is chocolate brown. How SWEET is that? Can’t wait to display it in my sewing room!

WP_000011

‘Valentines’ décor finds at TJ Maxx and More. The BEST TJ store, I think!

DSCF0316

How could I resist this darling turquoise polka-dot tiered dish? Look, it even matches my quilt on my table. No wonder I “had to have it!” They had lots of darling dishes that went with it. It was so hard to refrain myself from buying them. I am such a sucker for pretty dishes!

DSCF0319

This pillow with garden sentiments knew that one look is all it took. It practically jumped into my cart all by itself.

Life back in the real COLD world isn’t quite the same. But until we run-a-way again or Spring arrives, looking at my found treasures will have to suffice.

Home Tour–part three

Well, hope you have enjoyed the tour so far!

Today we are going to Jill’s home. She is a friend of mine that I met when they divided our ward and we became the Highland 18th. One of the great things that came into my life because of it.

DSCF0233

I went all “LADY GA-GA” over her mitten garland. Don’t you just love it?

DSCF0235

This Santa pillow tells it like it is!

DSCF0236

She decorates the top or her kitchen cupboards with Snowmen, as do I. Hmmm, wonder if she sleeps with them also?

DSCF0237

Her entire home brought us such JOY!

Sweet Amanda’s home is a treasure trove of antiques. It’s as though you have stepped back in time. How fun is that?

DSCF0238

Her tree was garnished with strands of beads and all sorts of Victorian beauties!

DSCF0239

I loved this rustic star!

DSCF0243

This poinsettia pillow definitely has an old fashioned flare.

DSCF0241

Cute felted bell wreaths adorned her chairs.

DSCF0245

She collects crocks and this one is all dressed up for the holidays.

DSCF0242

It was all just darling, but this has to be my favorite item of hers. Vintage bowls filled with GINGERBREAD men and CANDY CANES!

DSCF0246

I know that this just has to be Rudy and Trudy’s long lost brother. Not sure what I’m talking about? Ask Peggy La Cognata, I’m sure she’d be happy to tell you!

Two more homes left, and plenty more to enjoy! I know it’s getting close to Christmas. I know that you’re awfully busy. However, I KNOW that you won’t want to miss these!

Pickers Paradise

My picks-an old sprinkler (wonder if it still works?) and a childs apron. When Daniel, the owner of the Star Mill saw my apron he told me a childhood memory of his about a farm boys first trip to the city. It's a memory he will never forget and now I won't either. It made us laugh!

A week or so ago my friend, Diana told me about a show on the history channel called "The Pickers". It's about two middle aged men who travel back country roads looking for treasures. If they see an old building or barn they just stop and tell the owners that they are pickers and could they look around. Then they will barter with them and try and get them to sell. The people they meet are a breed of their own. They are so fun and that only makes the show much more interesting. As my hubby and I watched it for the first time he could tell that I was just like a kid in a candy store. By the time it was over he was convinced that when he retires that I am sure to have us on the road being "PICKERS". I have to admit sounds like fun. This is my new favorite show. Yesterday the Star Mill Antiques reopened. Romping from building to building and searching the yard is the closest thing to being a true picker. Except for here you know that everything is for sale. You can do some bartering. My husband calls him the 'junk man'. As my friends and I arrived you could feel the excitement in the air as the 'hunt was on'! Also, just visiting with the employees is a hi lite of our day. One of my friends is battling breast cancer right now and just being there was such good therapy for her. In fact, she was so busy visiting with everyone that she didn't buy a thing. I think that has to be a first for her. For the last few years I have been collecting old sprinklers. I think I only have three or four. I displayed them on the top of my potting bench. When we build a new playhouse I think I would like to put them on a shelf. I found a "SWEET" one and a cute little childrens apron. Sure to be a playhouse hit! I know that picking isn't for everyone, but for those of us who love it, what fun! My mother-in-law use to say that she didn't like old stuff in her home because it just reminded her of hard times. She did however like that I loved it. Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure. Hope to go picking again soon!

Virginian Treasure

I love these red dishes. What a find!

I'd follow that little Virginian Cardinal anywhere!

Thanks for such a fun visit.

Recently Shultz and I went to N. Carolina to visit his sister Laurie and her hubby Thayne.
What a great trip! We all went down to S. Carolina together. Talk about walking right into " Gone With The Wind". It was beautiful! The camelias, and azealeas were bloomin gorgeous.
I couldn't get over that wisteria grew wild all along the freeway. It's an obnoxious plant to them.
I say bring it on baby. I love the long clustery purple blooms. Dogwood trees were all in bloom and you would see them billowing out among the pines. It was absolutely breath taking. We returned to their house on a Tues. then Shultz and I headed for Virginia on Weds. We took in tons of Civil War sites. We both love history so it was great fun. Then we went to Colonial Williamsbug where we spent a day and a half. We walked up and down the streets a ton, sat through a few enactments, and of course shopped. Our last stop was at Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. From there we took the back roads to Laurie and Thaynes. We told them we would be back to have some Carolina BBQ. It was delicious. Pulled pork and deep fried corn on the cob, Yum! It was on these back roads that I acquired my Virginian treasure, RED DISHES.
They were in a little roadside country store. I passed them up at first knowing I really had no way of getting them home. After leaving the store I just couldn't get them out of my mind and
finally decided to go back. We were about 8-10 miles past it. Without too much coaxing Shultz turned the car around and back we went. To make a long story short we returned , bought, and brought home. Although we lost 4 pieces when Delta made us check our carry on because the plane was so small. Sad, but so so happy to have the rest. I will love and treasure them forever!
