Thanks to its convenient and sturdy nature, tintype photographs became more popular than other photography styles of the time.

In August of 2011 photographer Michael Shindler did something that to some might sound a little ludicrous. He had spent the last six years learning a cumbersome photographic process invented in the 1850s called Wet-Plate Collodion process that relies on metal plates to print photographs, and decided to use his unique skills to open the world’s only tintype portrait studio called Photobooth on Valencia street in San Francisco. Using a process invented in the 1850s, these one of a kind images were created using silver, light, and a 100 year old wooden camera. All of these images were created using studio lighting.

The brain child of Simon Mandel and Jen Jansen, Digital Tintypes was born out of a passion for testing the boundaries of what was possible in merging modern digital images and traditional photographic processes.
