Miniatures Monday: My Stable of Gaslands Cars

I've finally managed to complete 5 Gaslands cars, with two more waiting in the wings.  Now I just need to play the game! ;-)

A halfling chicken butcher done for a friend.  It's been a while since I've painted a figure this small, but I think that it turned out fairly well.  I just need to seal him and he'll be ready for the table.

Here is a green dragon that I'm pretty pleased with,  I could have done a better job on the shattered stone that he is standing on, but that is something that I can fix later.  I don't paint many dragons, as I don't have much call to use them in games.

I picked up a couple of Citadel Painting Handles this weekend, and so far, I'm pretty pleased with them.  They are spring loaded and can hold both round and square bases.  They also do a great job of keeping me from touching the paint, which has always been a bit of a problem for me. $8 U.S. from your local hobby store of from the GW web store.

Miniatures Monday - Riding the Wastelands

I've managed to finish another car for Gaslands.  When I started this one, I felt as if it was going to be a bit of a cheat since the car already had somewhat of a post-apocalyptic feel to it, but after dismantling it, stripping it and repainting it, I feel like I put enough work into it for it not to feel as if I'd cheated.

Gaslands - The next to the last of the V8 Interceptors

 I know that it's not the most interesting looking car for Gaslands, but I really wanted  a Ford Falcon XB in my stable of cars in honor of Mad Max, so I built this one.  Of course, it doesn't have a blower or extra fuel tanks, but maybe the next one will.  I lifted the wheels a bit as they seemed too low for what I was going for, and I'm pretty pleased with how the dust effect turned out.

Gaslands - Riding the Wastelands part 5: My first completed car

As often seems to be the case with me, the thing that I started last is the first to be completed.  The car that I accidentally stepped on and had to repair  is now painted and ready to roll.  I give you 5 views of my first Gaslands car, The Skull Crusher (not a very original name, I know).  It's got that Mad Max feel that I was going for.  Overall, I'm pretty happy with how the car turned out, and I think that it ended up even better than my pre-stepping on it concept.

Gaslands - Riding the Wastelands part 4: Ready to paint

Well, I now have 3 cars primed and ready for painting, although I'll admit that the middle one feels like a bit of a cheat, even though I added the mini-gun and hood skull. :-)

Gaslands - Riding the Wastelands Part 3: Ready to paint and happy accidents (2 cars!)

So I've primed my first Gaslands car and dry-fitted it to make sure that everything is good prior to painting it.  I think that it looks pretty cool with a flamethrower on the hood and a giant turbo-bosted engine in the rear.  I think that it looks good, but it doesn't quite have the Mad max feel that I was hoping for.  Still, I'm looking forward to painting it. 

As for the more Mad Max feel, I got that on another car quite by mistake.  I had a plan for making a '69 Mustang into a car with giant speakers on it and a skull ram.  I was well on my way to realizing my vision of a death-metal racer when disaster struck (or so I thought).  I had stripped down the car and drilled out holes for all of the accessories.  Then I stepped on the car...  Quite by accident, but man was I bummed out.  The roof bent and one of the roof pillars snapped off.  I'd had this happen to my Hot Wheels cars a few times when I was a kid, and that was generally the end of them.  But this time I got to thinking.  Those dudes in the wastelands wouldn't just scrap their car when it got jacked up.  After the apocalypse, there aren't going to be factories building new cars, so they would have to fix what they had.  In that spirit, I started on a revised plan for the car, and this is what I ended up with.  First, I made new roof pillars.  Then I added patches over the big holes.  I added a few bullet holes in the passenger side door, and replaced all of the glass with wire mesh.  I even gave it the ram that I'd planned to use for the original design.  Strangely enough, I'm liking this car better than what I had originally planned!  I'm really looking forward to getting this one primed and painted, maybe even more than the first car.

Well, progress has been made.  I've stripped the paint from the car, and primed the interior black.  Now comes the hard part, actually deciding how to build the car back up for my first Gaslands car.  Fuel tanks?  Guns?  Spikes?  All of the above?  So many choices...

Miniatures: Delvers Lost in the Dungeons of Doom III Kickstarter

     Alright, there are just 10 days left to get in on +Darcy Perry 's latest Kickstarter Delvers Lost in the Dungeons of Doom III!  Both of his previous miniatures Kickstarter's have been fantastic.  This guy has talent.  I won't rehash all of the details of the previous campaigns here, but here are links to my review of Delvers Lost in the Dungeons of Doom I and to a preview that I did for Delvers Lost in the Dungeons of Doom II.  Those will give you a lot more detail, but just let me say that Darcy makes some great miniatures, and both previous Kickstarters have been right on time.  

     These are excellent miniatures for any fantasy game, but I particularly love them for Dungeon Crawl Classics.  If  +Goodman Games is ever planning on doing an official line of DCC miniatures, then +Darcy Perry is the guy that they should look to for the sculpting!  I mean, just look at these miniatures:

     Oh, and did I mention the Beholder with an optional party hat?  Or the Dragon?  Yes, if funding reaches $10k NZ, there will be a dragon add-on available...

     Also, there is a pledge option of around $370 US where he will sculpt a custom miniature for you!  That pledge level is limited, and there are only 3 left.  If someone doesn't claim those last slots, I may need to scrape together some more cash and subject my gaming group to a Skullsword miniature. ;-)

Look what has arrived from new Zealand! These are latest miniatures from Star Hat Miniatures.  Another great set from +Darcy Perry I still need to assemble the troll.

I'm so very far behind on painting that I'm note sure when I will get around to these, but I've singled out three for priority painting!

This week, we take a trip into the sewers to visit a Ratman champion.  Ratmen are usually kind of pushovers, but this guy seems to be carrying a hill giant femur as a weapon, so I'm not sure that I'd mess with him.  The sculpt is by Ben Siens from Reaper Miniatures and is 02761: Skrattle, Giant Ratman.  Its still available from Reaper for just $7.99.

Deep beneath the earth in perpetually lightless caverns dwells this fearsome creature.  Though rooted to the stone floor, its flailing tentacles and gaping maw allow it to make a meal of anything unlucky enough to wander within its grasp.  The figure is from Reaper Miniatures 2658: Stone Lurker ($9.99) sculpted by Bob Olley.  I'm not overly happy with the way that the eye turned out.  I think that I need to rework that a bit.  Its been a few weeks since my last Miniatures Monday post.  This isn't because I haven't been painting, but rather because I haven't been photographing my work as regularly.  With the weather improving, I'm hoping to increase my output a bit.

Miniatures Monday

This is the stuff that nightmares are made of.  For this week's Miniatures Monday, we continue the recent monster theme with several photos of this giant spider.  I've always found giant spiders to be particularly horrific, and I honestly didn't expected to ever finish this figure.  It's 03049: Huge Spider from Reaper Miniatures and is still available for $17.99.  I bought this one years ago and it requires a bit of assembly.  Each pair of legs is separate, and it took a bit of trial and error to get them in the right order.  I love the end result, but it does have one drawback.  It has no base.  So, when used, the paint on the legs tips tends to chip off. :-(

To remedy that situation, I decided to make my own base for it.  I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but integrating a base with the figure does limit it a bit.  I guess now it's a desert spider.

So, what do all of you think?  Base or no base?  I'm really still on the fence about it.

This week, Miniatures Monday continues the theme of large humanoids with big bellies.  Here are a couple of photos of a rather angry looking Cyclops.  It's not a particularly large Cyclops, but that spiked club could really do some damage.  The figure is from Reaper Miniatures and is 02953: Cyclops.  You can get your own for only $5.99 U.S.

Miniatures Monday

Miniatures Monday returns with three photos of a Half-Ogre Adventurer.  I made some recent touchups to this guy, but overall I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.  On a figure of this size, eyes become even more important to the final result, so I'm glad that I fixed them on this guy.  The figure is from Reaper, 02966: Gorevane, Half Ogre Fighter, and it's still available at their online store for $8.99.  An interesting thing about this figure is that it came in two parts, but the second part was just the sword on his back, making the main figure a somewhat unusually large cast.
