Frequently Asked Questions
Klar is on but I do not see any difference
Open Klar and look at the header. A green Active pill and a spam filtered count mean the extension has been running. Read the pill as last-known activity rather than proof it is registered right now, because it stays green for 14 days after the last message Klar saw. The stronger signal is the date on the newest entry under Recent catches. If that is from the last day or two, Klar is working. If the newest catch is weeks old, or you see the setup card instead, the extension is not running. Switching it on takes two steps, and both are needed. Quit Mail with Cmd+Q and reopen it, then open any email. Mail only picks up the extension when it restarts, and only a real message starts it. Three other things explain a quiet inbox. Klar checks mail that arrives after you switch it on, not what is already there. Mail has to be running for Klar to see anything. And if your provider already filters spam on its own servers, there may be little left to catch. One last thing to check. If you set the spam action to Flag in red instead of Move to Junk, messages stay in the inbox with a red flag.
Why did Klar mark a legitimate email as spam?
No spam filter is perfect. If Klar flags a legitimate email, move it back to your Inbox or remove the flag to tidy up. In the free version this does not retrain the filter. Klar Plus does learn from your corrections and retrains on your own mail, on your Mac. To stop a specific sender being flagged, add them to your Contacts. The quickest way to report it is in the app: find the message under Recent catches and click the speech-bubble button on its row. That prefills an email with the reason Klar flagged it, so we can fix the cause and not just the one message. You can also write to incorrect@klar.im directly.
Does Klar send my emails to a server?
No. All email processing happens locally on your Mac. Klar never sends your emails, metadata, or any personal information to any server. See our Privacy Policy for details.
What macOS version do I need?
Klar requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon (M1 or newer).
How do I adjust the filtering sensitivity?
Open Klar and go to the Settings tab. You can choose between Cautious (fewer false positives), Standard (balanced), and Aggressive (catches more spam) profiles.
The extension doesn’t appear in Mail Settings
Try quitting Mail completely (Cmd+Q) and reopening it. If that doesn’t work, restart your Mac. The extension should appear in Mail > Settings > Extensions. If it was listed before and has since disappeared, open the Klar app once, then quit and reopen Mail and open any message. That has restored it in the one case we have seen, and we are treating it as a bug rather than as normal behaviour. Note that while the extension was missing it was not checking anything, so mail that arrived in the meantime was never classified.
Klar didn’t catch spam that was already in my Junk folder
Klar checks new mail as it arrives in your Inbox. If your email provider moved a message to Junk before it reached your Mac, Klar never sees that message, so it can’t re-check it. Klar works on the mail that reaches your Inbox. To go through mail that is already in Junk, including good messages sent there by mistake, open Klar Plus. It scans your Junk folder and lets you move real mail back to the Inbox with one click.
Should I keep Apple Mail’s own junk filter on?
For the most consistent results, let Klar be your only inbox filter. Open Mail > Settings > Junk Mail and turn off Enable junk mail filtering. Klar then decides what stays in your Inbox, so you don’t have two filters disagreeing. This only affects your Mac: mail your email provider already moved to Junk on its own servers is handled separately.
Can I stop Klar from flagging a sender I trust?
Yes. Klar never filters mail from people in your Contacts. In Klar, open Settings and turn on Trust my contacts, then add the sender to your macOS Contacts. This is handy for senders like shipping updates or payment receipts: add the address and Klar leaves their mail in your Inbox. Your contacts are read on-device only and never leave your Mac.
Has anyone independently audited Klar?
No. No third party has audited us, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Here is what does exist. Apple reviews the App Store build, which is where the sandbox and the app’s permissions are checked. Notarization means Apple scanned the build for known malware and knows who signed it. The check that matters most you can run yourself in a few seconds. The free app does not hold the macOS network permission at all. This post gives the command and explains what each guarantee covers. If your rule is to install nothing without a formal audit, that is a sound rule and we would rather you keep it.
