Arab Tunes mixtape # 42 - Cosmic Gnawa

A new mixtape that collects some beautiful songs belonging to  (non) genre that some call Nu Gnawa. The rhythms and sounds of the North African area have contaminated
over the years the entire planet and have come to create truly unique musical fusions. I have collected here some , in my opinion, of the most successful experiments . Good listening and a good journey.

Electric Jalaba

Electric Jabala is an English musical group dedicated to the exploration and reinvention of Gnawa music. The official biography of the group tells that the meeting between the various souls of the project took place in the English countryside during a music festival. Fascinated by the sounds of Gnawa music, after that first meeting they decided to meet again in a London studio for a series of exploratory Jam sessions.

From those sessions will come out the material that will end on their first album released in 2012 and entitled "Introducing Electric Jalaba". The sounds produced by the group represent an evolution of classical Gnawa music, an evolution that some critics have called Psychedelic Space-Age Gnawa, born from the different experiences of the individual participants in the project.

The group consists of brothers Henry, Oliver, Nathaniel and Barnaby Keen, all musicians and producers with a decade of experience in the music field. Henry and Oliver (the two older brothers) are very well known in the field of electronic music thanks to their DJ sets and their productions under the name of Soundspecies, while Barnaby, singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, has gathered many acclaim for his publications with the Flying Ibex alias.

This modern Partridge Family is joined by Dave De Rose, a highly experienced drummer (he has worked among others with Moloko, Mark Ronson, Jamie Cullum, Rokia Traore and Mulatu Astatke) and Simo Lagnawi, an Italian / English Gimbri player who moved to England in 2009 after a long stay in Morocco, considered one of the main performers of Gnawa music in the United Kingdom.

The project, which gives its best in the live dimension, will be carried around in various festivals, both in England and in Europe and the group will be asked to perform in Rabat during the Mawazine Festival, one of the most important musical events in Morocco .

In 2015 the second album of the group entitled "Merhaba" will be unveiled, representing a maturation and a deepening of their writing process. Well produced and well recorded the album, although notable, partly loses the freshness of the first work but consolidates the fame of the group that is one of the most exciting musical reality in Europe.

For 2018 a new album was expected, but there is no news yet.

Fawda Trio

Gnawa music is pure reflected by the warm bass sound and a voice guembri groove: real "invitation to travel".

Led by Reda Zine, a native of Casablanca, polyglot singer, guitarist and guembri player, the project "Fawda Trio" navigates between sacred and secular repertoires testifying to an antique musical heritage that remains open to contamination.

Fawda is an encounter between tradition and innovation that touches on the sonorities of Gnawa music, psychedelia and jazz. Gnawa music is pure groove, the warm, low sound of the guembri and voices transporting you across time.

REDA ZINE : Voice & Guembri Bass,
FABRIZIO PUGLISI : Fender Rhodes,
synthesizer ARP , Voice, Percussion.
DANILO MINEO : Percussion, Voice.

Mahmoud Guinia

Mahmoud Guinia (Arabic: محمود ﯕينيا‎, and rarely ﯕنيا or کانية also spelled Gania, Guinea or Khania; Born 1951), is a Moroccan Gnawa musician, singer and guembri player, who is traditionally regarded as a Maâllem (معلم محمود ﯕينيا), i.e. master.

He recorded for both domestic and foreign labels, and collaborated with numerous western musicians.

Guinia was born in the city Essaouira on the Atlantic coast. He is the second son of the master of Gnawa music, Maâllem Boubker Guinia (1927–2000) and the famous clairvoyant and "moqaddema" A'isha Qabral. His brothers Mokhtar Guinia and Abdellah Guinia are gnawa Maâllems too,and their sister Zaida is another moqqaddema.Mahmoud Guinia is married to a woman from Marrakech, with whom he has two sons and a daughter.
His family of both the father's and mother's sides came from present day Mali. They were employed as soldiers in the sultan's army.  They are regarded as the main representatives for the style of Essaouira, the Saouiri style.

Mahmoud Guinia has put out numerous recordings, which have not been documented very well. In the 1970s or so Moroccan music label Fikriphone released records of both live Lila ceremonies and studio sessions. In the next decades it was followed by Tichkaphone, whose materials were distributed in France by Sonodisc, and Agadir's La Voix El Maarif.

The most famous western release was recorded by Bill Laswell in 1994 and featured the American saxophone player Pharoah Sanders. Another, with Peter Brötzmann and Hamid Drake, was recorded at Wels's 1996 Music Unlimited festival.
