Humains also do that. I’ve never heard of a parent who pick up the wrong child from school or daycare.
I don’t normal smell my child but I call for them and find them. in groups of thousands thou? I took me hours to find my daughter to pick her up from comic con.

From the day care worker’s reaction when I almost did this, it’s a fairly common phenomenon, especially early on. And especially when they accidentally swap the kids’ clothes!

You got me there. The equivalent would be a human parent sniffing every kid in daycare and screeching a bit until their child screeches back.
Creche literally mean daycare…
I’m now very embarassed that I first encountered the word in Baldur’s Gate 3 and assumed it was a stupid fantasy thing they made up.
