So...this may sound like midlife crisis crazy talk, but I've had it with here/where my life is at right now, and so I've come to a very important decision on where my journey is taking me:
Grovers Bend, Kansas.
I am serious. It looks amazing. I want E.T's mom to be my mom. I wouldn't even mind having to live on a farm because I would have an awkward Billy Zane to tell me about what life is like in the big city instead of make out with me. Billy Zane does not seem to want to make out with anyone in this movie. And that would be okay with me because he is not really my kind of thing.…
Look, I know it’s cliche to compare this thing to Gremlins, but like…come on…it’s pretty much just Gremlins. A lighthearted horror-comedy about a bunch of silly little delinquent alien furballs terrorizing simple middle America townsfolk? They get hungry and you aren’t supposed to let them eat or else things get worse? They have sharp teeth and an evil laugh and roll around in balls like Sonic the Hedgehog on bath salts? It’s Gremlins. Well, except for the silly ass shape-shifting Ravager-looking extraterrestrial bounty hunters. That’s certainly an added flavor. As is that ‘Power of the Night’ song which someone somewhere thought was so good they had to play it like eight times throughout the movie. Sure could’ve used a hell of a lot more action, though. Less antagonistic porcupine behavior, more devouring young Billy Zane in a barn. Notes to live by for any movie.
Small town 50’s sci fi beamed Into the 80’s is one of my favorite things, and Critters is just that—complete with a proto slingshot-wielding bart simpson, bounty hunters, Johnny steele, M. Emmit Walsh, billy zane, all star 80’s mom Dee Wallace, and troublemaking Critters doing what they do best.
One of the movies my childhood friend charley and I would watch every weekend when my folks would drop me off at his house so they could go party and get loaded with his parents. Between this and Tremors I can’t really say I know which one we watched more, but I can tell you that we wore out both tapes, and my deep love for 50’s sci-fi snorting lines of 80’s aesthetic…
"That dork from New York!"
What the hell was up with all the Monsters and Alien Creatures from outer space in the 80's - what was their beef with people from small American towns?
At least Jason Voorhees managed to get off his ass and visit the 'Big Apple' although he did end up totally loosing it and going to space - so probably not the best example?
Anyway all I've got to say about Critters is that Johnny Steele rules OK!
I borrowed all 4 of these from the library so this is my next series to revisit even though I haven’t finished Phantasm yet, I wanted to go ahead and start on this...and I love it because y’all know I love me some cute killer monsters!
I remember the first two movies being pretty frightening when I was a kid and it’s funny how that works because it’s not the least bit scary as an adult but it’s super fun. Dee Wallace is so young (and gorgeous) here! It needed a little more critter action if I’m honest, but I had fun regardless.
Bananameter: 🍌 billy zane’s “2GR8” license plate 🍌
FURRY BALLS WITH TEETH THAT EAT PEOPLE!!!
FACELESS SHAPE SHIFTING BOUNTY HUNTERS!!!
BUCKETS AND BUCKETS OF EIGHTIES CHEESE!!!
Sorry for shouting so much, but how can this not be anything but fun?
do they have critters plushies i would buy one
the critter said fuck lmao
all time childhood classic. Critters are on the surface just the evil twin and r-rated-lookalike 50s-meet-80s-amalgamation of ET but essentially the horde of furry communist hedgehog gremlins represent the break into a mid-western idyll of a picture perfect family with a mom in apron all day long, Chief-Wiggum-with-Homer-Simpson voice cops, destroyed churches by extraterrestrials and some evil black hay bails rolling over the countryside.
the more i think about it, the more i’m pretty sure this was just a David Lynch side project.
Power of the Night is probably one of the greatest “fake” movie songs ever.

An average all american family face the onslaught of extra-terrestrial attack from toothy furballs with venomous quills referred to as Crites aka Critters! If that wasn't enough to get the ole adrenal glands working overtime there's a pair of shapeshifting alien bounty hunters hot on the trail of the ravenous Critters who are just itching to see some action!
100% pure unadulterated cheesy Sci-Fi goodness!
