Growing these seed crystals in space could lead to much more pure wafers, says Western: “You can almost press the reset button on what we think is the limit of a semiconductor.”

Frick’s company Astral plans to do this with a mini fridge-sized furnace that reaches temperatures of about 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,700 degrees Fahrenheit). The applications of crystal growth are not just limited to semiconductors but could also lead to higher quality pharmaceuticals and other materials science breakthroughs.

Other products made in space could be produced with similar benefits. In January, China announced it had made a groundbreaking new metal alloy on its Tiangong space station that was much lighter and stronger than comparable alloys on Earth. And the unique environment of low gravity can offer new possibilities in medical research. “When you shut off gravity, you’re able to fabricate something like an organ,” says Mike Gold, the president of civil and international space business at Redwire, a Florida-based company that has experimented with in-space manufacturing on the International Space Station for years. “If you try to do this on Earth, it would be squished.”

When it comes to creating images of the earth from above, satellites, drones, planes and spacecraft are what tend to come to mind. But a startup called Near Space Labs is taking a very different approach to taking high-resolution photos from up high.

Near Space Labs is building aircraft that are raised by helium balloons and then rely on air currents to stay up, move around to take pictures from the stratosphere, and eventually glide back down to earth. On the back of significant traction with customers using its images, the startup has now raised $20 million to expand its business.

Bold Capital Partners (a VC firm founded by Peter Diamandis of XPRIZE and Singularity University fame), is leading the Series B round. Strategic backer USAA (the U.S. Automobile Association) is also investing alongside Climate Capital, Gaingels, River Park Ventures, and previous backers Crosslink Capital, Third Sphere, Draper Associates, and others that are not being named. Near Space Labs has now raised over $40 million, including a $13 million Series A in 2021.

Featuring the Electro-Mechanical Brake and by-wire technology on the rear brakes, the project will also include ZF’s Integrated Brake Control and traditional front calipers, creating a ‘hybrid’ braking system of by-wire and hydraulics that offers increased flexibility to the manufacturer. The agreement will also provide significant steering technology with ZF’s Electric Recirculating Ball Steering Gear. This cutting-edge braking technology combined with traditional braking systems and innovative steering tools further solidifies ZF’s position as the industry leader in providing complete chassis solutions to its customers while providing a major customer win.

“We are all proud to see ZF’s technology leadership in the Chassis segment providing tangible value for our customers. Our goal when combining our steering, braking, dampers and actuators as well as corresponding software businesses into a single division was to create the world’s most comprehensive Chassis Solutions product and system offering,” said Peter Holdmann, Board of Management member at ZF and head of Division Chassis Solutions. “This combined center of expertise allows us to offer comprehensive solutions that integrate advanced engineering, innovative design, and cutting-edge technology to deliver unparalleled performance and safety.”

The road to the software-defined vehicle With the Electro-Mechanical Brake (EMB) as a key component of the brake-by-wire technology, ZF lays the foundation for the software-defined vehicle that will lead to new functions and features, many that emphasize safety as much as driving comfort. One such feature being explored with by-wire technology is the ability for the vehicle to autonomously brake and steer in a crash situation.

ZF’s Electro-Mechanical Brake provides premium performance for automatic emergency braking, full energy recuperation and redundant fallback options up to full automated driving for passenger car and light truck segments.

Over the past few decades, solar cells have become increasingly widespread, with a growing number of individuals and businesses worldwide now relying on solar energy to power their homes or operations. Energy engineers worldwide have thus been trying to identify materials that are promising for the development of photovoltaics, are eco-friendly and non-toxic, and can also be easily sourced and processed.

These include kesterite-based materials, such as Cu₂ZnSnS₄ (CZTS), a class of semiconducting materials with a that resembles that of the naturally occurring mineral kesterite. Kesterite could have various advantages over the conventional silicon-based photovoltaics that are most used today, including lower manufacturing costs, a less toxic composition and greater flexibility.

Despite their potential, kesterite solar cells developed to date attain significantly lower power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than their silicon counterparts. This is in great part due to atomic-scale defects in kesterite-based materials that trap charge carriers and prompt non-radiative recombination, a process that causes energy losses and thus reduces the solar cells’ performance.

Have you ever considered that everything you know—the planets, stars, galaxies, and even you—might actually exist inside an enormous black hole? What if the universe we call home is merely the interior of a cosmic leviathan, swallowing light from another reality we can never directly observe?

For decades, black holes have captured our imagination as cosmic monsters devouring everything in their path, where even light cannot escape their gravitational clutches. But recent discoveries are forcing scientists to consider an extraordinary possibility: that our entire universe might itself be a black hole. This isn’t science fiction—it’s a serious scientific hypothesis with growing evidence behind it.
