Marcel "Ekki" Hołowienko (born December 9, 2002) is a Polish/British player who is currently playing for Rune Eaters.

Biography

[edit]

Ekki was born in Poland and grew up in the United Kingdom.[1] He was first introduced to gaming through browser games at 13, later playing Warcraft III's campaign and custom games such as tower defences, although he did not play DotA: Allstars. He was first introduced to Dota 2 at around 15 or 16 by his older brother. The moment that got him hooked was when his brother was playing Abaddon, and told him that his ultimate, Borrowed Time, made him unkillable — only for the enemy Axe to use Culling Blade on him, instantly killing him.[2]

Ekki began his professional Dota 2 career in 2020, playing in smaller tournaments such as ESL Premiership, and played for Into The Breach before they formally signed Creepwave to enter the Dota Pro Circuit. Ekki himself attempted to join the Dota Pro Circuit with Wisła Kraków, playing alongside Polish veteran Exotic_Deer, but the team fell in the Closed Qualifier. He briefly stood-in for Division II teams that Tour: No Bounty Hunter in Western Europe and 5RATFORCESTAFF in North America. However, subsequent attempts to qualify with Wisła Kraków failed, and the next season was very barren for Ekki, as he only stood in for PuckChamp in Division II, and Level UP in Pinnacle 25 Year Anniversary Show.

In 2024, he got his big break after he was invited to join Team Secret. Although Western Europe was tough to qualify from, the Closed Qualifiers had three slots due to the region's strength, and the newly-formed team made a lower-bracket run, upsetting Entity in the Lower Bracket to qualify. Secret, however, struggled at the event, going 0/6/1 in Group Stage 1, and were eliminated.

At this point, Ekki doubted whether professional Dota 2 was truly for him.[2] After a brief stint on 9Pandas, finishing joint-last at Elite League Season 1, he joined Team Tea, which quickly rose to becoming one of the strongest teams in the Tier 3 circuit, with wins in CCT Series 1 and RES Regional Series: EU #3. The team then rebranded as AVULUS, qualifying for PGL Wallachia Season 2 and finishing first in European Pro League Season 19 and CCT Series 3, as well as an impressive 2-0 win over PARIVISION in RES Regional Champions. It was around this time that Ekki realised that team factors mattered so much in Dota 2, not just his own performances, and he believed he could still compete at the highest level.[2]
