“Finish what we started last night?”

“Man,” Jack says, and Robby can hear the pleasure and interest in his voice, alongside a thread of amusement, “I forgot you get like this after a big night as well.”

It’s the morning after the PTMC winter party, and Robby has a hangover.

The picturesque village of Buell, Maine is one of the last in the United States to continue the tradition of the “harvest” or “prosperity” lottery. Its residents insist the lottery makes them stronger, even as condemnation from outsiders grows.

“I know we don’t have candles, but can you say the blessing for me anyway?”

“You speak Hebrew now?” Robby teases.

“Maybe I just like the sound of your voice,” Jack says.

Robby perfects talking to him without talking to him. Checks in with banal questions about the whens of his shifts and barely remembers to listen to the answers. He’s pantomiming participating in life, and badly. He misses the looks that Jack sends him, drops the references, bumps shoulders around ER beds.

They have a shorthand, the two of them. They don’t need words or explanations, not when they have a rhythm and choreography that decades of working together have given them.

Only Robby can’t hear the music now.

That’s what they’ll say, in the end: Dr. John Shen swooped Mel up, out of Langdon’s grasp. Good for him. Good for her, finally fucking higher on the food chain.

Or,

If she thinks back, Ramona can remember so clearly the first time she saw Destiny on the roof, shivering and asking for a light. It was instinct to wrap her up in her fur, to want to keep her warm and teach her how to thrive in this life, not just survive.

There were nights where Ramona would sit with a client, looking over at Destiny and taking in how she worked. The tilted head, the wide eyed innocent look she’d give them before biting her bottom lip, giving the customer just a hint of what she could do for them. Selling a fantasy that all powerful men think they can buy.

Destiny was damn good at it. She even got Ramona.

Darnell nodded, glancing over Robby like he was trying to place him in the hierarchy of important to ignorable and it could go either way. “What’s this?”

“MSF FNG,” Jack shot back. Whatever that meant, he sounded amused.

Darnell scoffed and looked to Robby, expression going decidedly unimpressed. “Oh, yeah? You here to find yourself? Have an adventure? Do something hard?” he asked, each question more mocking than the last.

And there was that question again, like it was haunting Robby. He stifled his instinct to bite back and kept it simple: “I’m here to help.”
