News websites are among the very worst websites in the entire world. Always have been. We need real news, real reporting, real journalism, but the ad tracking badweb around it is like cement shoes.

News and journalism websites absolutely totally dropped the ball many years ago and has never recovered it. Now perhaps they’re not to blame for it anymore than an oil painter is to be blamed for not understanding JPEG artifacts but this is one of the main reason the world is so messed up now.

This isn’t new. We’ve been drenched by garbage web since the nineties with Dreamweaver and Flash and huge pixmaps. But even so, it’s refreshing to see it called out.

We now have sufficient applications and hosting options that virtually anyone can run many of their own Internet Services.

The future of the web depends on simple, open standards.

This was a fun read.

I love protocols. Awareness of the protocols that rule us, and a willingness to hack on them and improve them, is (I believe) the path forward to save humanity from what capitalism currently is (a planet-gorging evil that makes Galactus look like a tin soldier).

This site doesn’t allow to add or display any user generated content (UGC). One could argue that I can’t because this is a static site, but it could be easy to add comments via discuss or an opensource alternative like Isso or Chirpy.

Q: Can Bear Blog be self-hosted?

A: Bear Blog has been built as a platform and not as an individual blog generator. It is more like Substack than Hugo. Due to this it isn’t possible to individually self-host a Bear Blog.

But that wasn’t the question, which was: can other instances of the platform be spun up?

I don’t know for sure but it does seem that way. It’s MIT licensed & it seems to be all there, caddy files and all. IDK.

So far, stumbling over a blog on Bear has been a heck of a lot less painful than stumbling over one on say, Medium. And I am grateful that there are alternatives to asking people to self host generated static files.

In the long run all “up-and-coming” sites usually are super nice with RSS & low-weight & interoperability & free icecream but what matters is whether that lasts. That said, Medium sucked from day one and this seems awesome several years in, so 🤷🏻‍♀️
