According to Ernest Becker, it is this transcendental impulse which leads to the rise and fall of civilizations. He argued, in the 1974 classic, The Denial of Death, that a basic human drive is the denial that we are going to die. He sees religion, art, science, war, and politics—even civilization itself—all as “immortality projects”, ways of trying to transcend death.
