First understand this series is not a retelling of the novel. Therefore it is also NOT like the movie with Maggie Smith. This series really is more stories about Jean Brodie imagined by what i believe are different writers. So things happen here that did not happen in the novel.
It's really quite good. Jean in this series is less narcissistic, kinder, and less abrasive and shrill than the character in the book/movie. She is less full of herself. The girls of Marcia Blaine School are interesting, funny and rather silky.
The acting across the board is terrific. Production values are very good. The original character are mostly all present. Just don't expect to see episodes played out from the book. This is like highly produced fan fiction.

I thought Geraldine McEwan gave a sterling performance. Miss Gaunt was indeed a gaunt character well played. The girls Sandy and Jenny were very amusing and well played. Indeed the various girls in Miss Brodie's class played their parts very well. The thing that surprised me was that film stopped so abruptly without any obvious end. I would have expected more episodes. Did they just can it for some reason ?
I really enjoyed seeing this on PBS. I didn't like the 1969 movie, due to nudity. It was rated PG, however with the nude scene it should have been X. This mini TV series tells about a Girls school. Ms. Brodie was a teacher the girls admired. She took them to the Ballet, served them tea and got them interested in the arts. They should release this mini series to DVD. I'm sure other people would be interested in this program. Dorothy a girl who was interested in the arts had a strict Father, who beat her with a belt. All because she broke the china doing head stands. I give this mini series "A+." I just hope someday that it will be released so everyone can enjoy these type of educational programs sponsored by PBS.
What more can you say about 'Geraldine McEwen'. Another Superb Performance by an Icon of Stage and Screen. Geraldine performance of "Miss Jean Brodie" is outstanding. A Must See! if you haven't watched it already. I've been searching for this dvd, and can't seem to get hold of it. Has it been released on dvd? The 'Dame Maggie Smiths' version is just as compelling. British talent at its Best! True Icons of the Stage and Screen...
Geraldine McEwen is one of my favourite actresses.

Sanitized, whitewashed with an abrupt ending. If you've read the Muriel Spark book, there are few similarities. Disappointing in what was a good start Great acting.

- TriviaThe first episode is set largely in Newcastle and the sepia stills in the opening titles show local scenes (the Tyne and swing bridges, Grey's monument and the castle). The remainder of the series takes place in Edinburgh and the titles show scenes from there: Edinburgh Castle, the West End of Princes Street, the rear of Register House and the Dean Village.
