Well now this episode hits different with mith Matthew now being with us any more , he was literally the funniest and the most character i could relate to , he saved me and times i needed someone and there was no one that would understands me except chandler , Matthew Perry never disappointed us in make us laugh , cry , smile and feeling a lot of other feelings, a great actor that never had the appreciation he deserved, he will always go down on my list as the greatest comedy actor of all time , the way he played the character was absolutely tremendous that no one ever could have played it like this , goodby Matthew , we will try to keep it down.
The first episode of "Friends" I have rated 10/10 and it's all down to one man. Matthew Perry take a bow sir. His performance is nothing short of superb Plot In A Paragraph: After Mr. Heckles, the annoying old guy who lives beneath the girls (and tried to steal Marcel) dies, and since he has no relatives he leaves all his belongings to Monica and Rachel calling them "the noisy girls in the apartment above mine". Going through his belongings Chandler notes similarities between himself and Mr.Heckles and he worries he will die alone just like him. Meanwhile, Phoebe and Ross argue over evolution.
Perry should have been nominated for an Emmy for his work in this episode, he is a delight, showing a full range of emotions. The last scene before the final credits one was very touching.
He was my favourite character before due to him being the funniest one, now he has showed he can be sweet and vulnerable too.
In a side note Jennifer Aniston looked really cold when filming this episode and I'm a fan of that too.

Whilst this episode is excellent and gives a glimpse of the overall brilliance of Season 2, the main reason it stands out for me is the performance of Matthew Perry.
I imagine that at the time the series was probably a little too young for it to be recognised by The Emmy committee but, having watched it several times through TV re-runs, it is clear to see that Perry puts in a wonderful sequence of beautifully-acted scenes which highlight Chandler at his achingly neurotic best.
You really feel like you go on a journey through his back-story, and come to empathise with his current-day status as loner-to-be, all in the space of less than 25 minutes. If retroactive Emmys were to be handed out, I would no hesitation in nominating this episode as Perry's magnum opus.

To the reviwer who says Mr. Heckles comes back in season three:
Of course he does.
Technically.
Did you NOT watch 3x6?
It's a FLASHBACK episode. Has the word right there in the title.
Meaning BEFORE Mr. Heckles died.
Duh.
It's not a plot hole or oversight.
3x6 takes place before THIS episode, so he's alive in that one.
Besides my rant, this is a wonderful episode, mainly due to Matthew Perry's acting.
Chandler believing he would end up like Heckles was entertaining and heartbreaking to watch, even knowing he and Monica eventually get together.
End note: Janice is always a funny touch to every episode she's in.

I like the bit where nothing funny actually happened but the laugh track was going berserk
