    Granny's Spring Tonic

Forget Granny's Spring Tonic. Jed could be heading for a spring wedding.

Miss Hathaway unleashes her protege Gloria Buckles (Lola Albright) to look after the Clampetts bank account. She is studious and unglamorous. Just the kind of frump Miss Hathaway admires.

Only when Gloria turns up to see Jed, she has turned into a glamourpuss. A gold digger who wants to worm her way into his bank account. She entices Jed into taking her into an outing in Los Angeles.

A worried Granny and Cousin Pearl realise just what Gloria's game is. They team up to put a stop to it.

An enjoyable episode. Maybe the first one where Jethro does not talk about where the noise is coming from when the doorbell rings.

    JED AND THE TONIC.

Producer Paul Henning had Phil Shuken co-write this episode, and it's a hoot. Phil wrote for the REAL McCOYS.

Miss Jane has an assistant, a surprise because Mr. Drysdale is cheap. Classy Lola Albright (PETER GUNN) turns up in an un-classy role -- at the beginning. Her job is to watch over Jed's HUGE bank account. This is when the makeup changes. Gloria (Albright) transforms herself into a beauty queen (and she's beautiful anyway), all to marry into money. LOTS. What a gold-digger.

LUCKILY, Granny and Cousin Pearl know her game, and when the fun starts.

The off kilter dialogue is always a star, and Gloria's last name is Buckles? Henning had to have cooked that one up.

The other running gag, which ties into this larcenous love story, is Granny's Spring Tonic, a combo of a health drink (sort of like Geritol back in the day) and something to light your boots on fire, Moonshine XXX. Granny's kitchen experiments gone wild, making her (sort of) a part time chemist and doctor. Jed takes a swig of the home brewski and will it change his attitude in Lovers Lane???

Director Richard Whorf has a field day here.
