Mr. Drysdale, believing the Clampetts are leaving Beverly Hills for good (and a frequent theme), arranges for a FIRST CLASS trip back home to the country. A limmo, a jet plane and mink coats for the ladies -- all done to make Jed, Granny, Elly and Jethro feel guilty for leaving.
But you darn well know they aren't. They're just going to visit cousin Pearl (Bea Benedaret), Jethro's mom, for Christmas.
Two points to be made, especially if you're a long time fan. Pearl had her eyes set on Mr. Brewster, a classy version of Mr. Drysdale, and Miss Jane had a crush on Jethro. These were two bits that got a lot of mileage in the series. Also, had Bea Benederet not starred in her own tv show (PETTICOAT JUNCTION), she certainly would have been a regular on this series.
As I have noted before, producer and writer Paul Henning tossed in some links to the MA AND PA KETTLE film series, which the show was loosely based on. The Kettles were not acquainted with new fangled inventions, much like the Clampetts. For starters, Jed and everybody else think the airplane is a floating bus? Funny stuff which opened the door to many other gags in the years to come. A later Christmas episode would find Granny mistaking a new tv set for a washing machine? How Henning came up with that was a small wonder.
Top direction by Richard Whorf, who did much to make this show a mega hit. All the wacky characterizations had Whorf's stamp of approval.
Popular character actor Frank Wilcox, master of the double take, plays Mr. Brewster and look for teenage Eilene Janssen as one of the stewardesses. She was the most photographed baby of all time, featured in a series of high profile ad campaigns. Later a juvenile actress who was crowned Little Miss America in 1944. Great trivia question.
Super duper ventriloquist Paul Winchell appears as Grandpa, another perfect fit. He only guested twice, missed opportunity. He was everywhere on tv at the time, also a master of makeup and disguises. Best playing a hippie director on the BRADY BUNCH!
A wonderful holiday episode. Only debit; it should have been in color. Been saying that a lot lately.
More goofy XMas episodes to come. SEASON 1 EPISODE 13 remastered CBS dvd box set. Classic First Season. According to Amazon, seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be remastered on blu ray and released in 2027. Thanks to METV for running all nine seasons. 1962-71.
With a teenage daughter. Did Jed ever serve during World War 2. It's because the Clampetts have never seen an aeroplane before.
Mr Drysdale fixes the Clampetts to go first class on a plane journey so they can visit Cousin Pearl for Christmas.
The Clampetts were planning a long trip by car. They could not believe they could get back home in a matter of hours instead of days.
Cousin Pearl meanwhile cooks up a fancy dinner for Mr Brewster who manages to then upset her. He offers a job as a housekeeper.
A festive episode and interesting to see just what first class plane travel was like in 1962. Luxury seats with plenty of legroom and movies on a plane.
Mr. Drysdale has arranged first-class VIP jet travel including a limo to Cousin Pearl's, and has gifted Granny and Elly with mink coats. They mistake the plane for a giant bus and Granny says "Let's get off this thing before it gets any higher".
Miss Jane bids Jethro adieu with a kiss and warns the stewardess "the tall, young, good-looking one is MINE!".
Back at the cabin, Pearl is angling for a Xmas proposal from Mr. Brewster and just as she's certain he's gonna pop the question, she finds out he's looking for a housekeeper - not a wife! She storms out in a huff, taking her homemade curtains and goodies with her.
After the Clampetts arrive back home and hug Pearl and Jethrine (Max Baer Jr in drag), Grandpa Winch (Paul Winchell in old-age makeup) invites Granny on a sleigh ride. But when he promises to behave, she quips, "Then I may as well stay here!".
A very good episode, even if it could have been set around any holiday or special occasion. Being Season 1, the fish-out-of-water jokes are still fresh and funny here. This and the Season 2 Xmas episode (which is funnier) are definitely worth seeing.
8/10.

- TriviaThis takes place in December 1962.
- GoofsJed's hunting dog, Duke, does not appear when the Clampetts pack their truck for an out-of-state Christmas trip, suggesting an intend to venture away for a week or more without Duke or putting him in someone's care. Duke is a dog but also family, and the Clampetts would not abandon him like this.
- Quotes
Jed Clampett: [while the airplane takes off] By doggies, if he gits to goin' much faster, this thing's gonna leave the ground.
Daisy Moses: Don't look now, but it IS leavin' the ground.
Jed Clampett: Jethro, you better it up there and tell that bus driver to slow down.
