    JETHRO, WORLD SERIES PITCHER?

REQUIRED viewing. Outrageous, yet clever writing on the part of producer Paul Henning. First off, you have to give him credit for coming up with the Dodgers angle, a terrific PR stunt considering the stadium was recently built.

    10 Stars.

In order to introduce Jed and Jethro to the finer things in Beverly Hills, he invites them to the course to "shoot" a few holes of golf? Jed's comments are a laugh riot, from the book of classic 101 misinterpretations. He instructs Jethro to shoot a "golf" when it comes out of the hole, figuring its some kind of a critter??? I am cracking up writing this stuff!

On the course, noneother than Dodger manager Leo "nice guys finish last" Durocher meets up with Jed and Jethro -- AT FIRST -- believing they're caddies. After sizing up big and tall Jethro, he offers him a contract as the next pitching sensation with the team!

Watch how this all spins out of control, right to the crazy finale. Henning had a unique sense of humor. Director Richard Whorf makes this fun, and Leo Durocher isn't a bad amateur actor. Skip Ward plays Walsh, later producer for DUKES OF HAZZARD. Veteran actor Wally Cassell plays Buzzie, known for WHITE HEAT, starring James Cagney.

Yes, I agree with the last reviewer. Would have been tv history had Leo hooked up with Elly May.

Partly filmed at Dodger stadium, and an inspiration to the writers of MR. ED. The following season, Ed would run the bases at the stadium, getting to meet and greet Leo Durocher. One of the Top 100 TV episodes of all time, although this story ain't bad either.

SEASON 1 EPISODE 29 remastered CBS dvd box set. Seasons 1 through 5 are on dvd, and according to Amazon, seasons 6 through 9 are expected to be released on blu ray in 2027. Thanks always to METV and CATCHY TV for running every single episode, 1962-71.

    The Clampetts and the Dodgers

Mr Drysdale has invited Jed and Jethro to shoot some golf balls. They think they will be hunting animals, not playing the sport of golf.

Granny tells them to get some greens while they are out there. Mr Drysdale has yet to introduce the Clampett's to a grocery store in Beverly Hills.

In the golf course they come across legendary baseball coach Leo Durocher. He mistakes Jed and Jethro as two down on their heels golf caddies.

Leo is soon impressed by Jethro's throwing arm and wants to sign him up for the LA Lakers. Until it turns out that Jethro can't throw without smearing his hands in possum fat.

I just did not see the possum fat being smeared at the golf club!

It was a funny episode once the action moves to the golf club. Maybe Leo should had seen a way to sign up Elly May.

    • Trivia
Guest star Leo Durocher, playing himself, was a head coach of several major league baseball teams: Brooklyn Dodgers (before they moved to Los Angeles), New York Giants (before they moved to San Francisco), Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, and the Taiheiyo Cub Lions (Japanese/Nippon League), compiling a record of 2,008-1,709/.540 win percentage. Ironically, at the time of filming, he was not in a head coaching position, although he was with the Dodgers.
    • Goofs
Jethro does smear possum fat at golf course. You don't see him, but you see him open his jacket and get inside pocket. Then the scene cuts.
    • Quotes

Jed Clampett: The way I got it figgered, when the golf comes out of his hole to get his eggs back, you shoot him.
