    COACH'S LAST BIG HURRUH?

Coach, obviously is ill, knowing what we know now,so this was his big finale.

I wonder,if back in 1984,the public knew about Mr. Colasanto's illness at the time--or the studio audience.

Part one was very good and part two needed an ending out of a fairy tale--"They get married and Coach and bride go off together to live in Idaho(or Hawaii)". Would have wrapped up the Coach character nicely.

But the writers went on and on with Coach's MIA from the bar with various excuses that didn't seem to ring true--even for Coach.

Can't write 'em all perfectly ,I guess.

    Creative Episode

This one begins with discussion of what is going on with the Coach. Each major character is in his or her house, describing what happened. Then we go to the bar where Coach is fully optimistic that the woman who won the lottery would still want to marry him. There is some decent byplay along the way. Coach is the eternal optimist.

    Cheers At Its Most Bittersweet

Part 2 of Coach In Love reaches its inevitable conclusion, leaving the audience incredibly sad for our beloved Ernie. The object of his affection Irene is barely in this episode, which deals mostly with the gang gently trying to get Coach to "wake up and smell the coffee."

This episode features some of Nicholas Colasanto's best acting. Coach is such a kindhearted guy that he can't even blame Irene for rejecting him, but that doesn't mean he accepts it. It's not surprising that there aren't a lot of laughs here. The funniest parts are the inventive way of recapping the events from the previous show (including a voice cameo from Frasier, otherwise MIA) and Sam's increasingly pathetic attempts to hook up with Sue. Coach has a sweet and funny moment where he explains why a pizza is no substitute for a lover. But in the end, this episode just leaves our crew and the audience very sad.

    • Trivia
Cliff Clavin's mother is heard speaking but is not seen. The voice was not that of Frances Sternhagen, who would later go on to play Cliff's "Ma", Esther Clavin, in a recurring role.
    • Goofs
Irene says she went to the Governor's Mansion. This can not be true since Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the only two states that do not have Governor Mansions.
    • Quotes

Sam Malone: Oh, Carla, boy I hate to criticize, but I can't actually believe you read these sleazy scandal sheets?! I mean, look at this. I'm even above this. "Bigfoot Stole My Wife". "Have Aliens Taken Over Your Pet?" I mean, this is garbage.

Carla Tortelli: For your information Sam, I don't read those articles. I think they're just as stupid as you do. I get it because they happen to have a great crossword puzzle.

Carla Tortelli: [sits and starts working the the puzzle] OK, let's see. 7-across, "Five-headed cow born in Vermont".

      [pauses]

      Carla Tortelli: Maybelle.

      [starts writing]

Carla Tortelli: 16-across, "State with the most UFO babies". Arkansas.

      [writes]

Sam Malone: [mutters incredulously] I don't believe this.

Carla Tortelli: 32-across, "Aphrodisiac found in every kitchen cabinet".

[Sam secretly starts showing some interest, but still feigns disinterest]

Carla Tortelli: Uh, I don't know what that one is. Let me see what 14-down is. "Where Franco's brain is being kept alive". Fishtank. OK, so, the fifth letter of the aphrodisiac is an A. Now I remember: oregano.

Sam Malone: [Sam secretly grabs a napkin and pen, and starts scribbling "oregano"] Trash.
