    Not christie but charteris

I am disappointed that several of tbe reviews refer to agatha christie as an influence not realising her novel has plot points taken from Leslie charteris' film script lady on a train starring Diana Derbin which predates dear agatha by nearly ten years. The writer admitted he had watched the film before he wrote this script and thought it might be amusing to use an idea directly from Leslie charteris in s series about his most famous character Simon templar the saint.

Its a shame that lou grade didnt commit to a second series of this show rather than spend his money on movie flops like raise the titanic.

Young Ciaran Madden learns her trade.

An entertaining romp from 1978. Roughly halfway through this single season, Ogilvie had settled into his role as Templar. I am still amazed that, in 1978, Leyland could supply a Jaguar XJS, which apparently started every time!

Difficult to watch Frederick Jaeger playing a policeman without thinking of him as the Chief Constable in the Joan Hickson version of Agatha Christine's Miss Marple.

Nice quote at the end: "Welcome to the human race, Sergeant."

There were a few plot holes, but it passed an hour late on an evening in 2023. Good use of abandoned buildings, learning from the Sweeney blasting around what would become London's Docklands around the same time.

The Saint finds a dead body...

On a train, The Saint helps a woman who saw a murder occur in a warehouse window as the train is moving, but they tell the police and they investigate there's no warehouse ... at first, that is, but soon the Saint figures out the confusion of whereabouts of the warehouse and finds a dead body in the bargain ...

The idea of a woman on a train spotting a murder is obviously taken from Agatha Christie's 4.50 from Paddington, but of course its adjusted a bit in this intriguing Return of the Saint episode with murder happening in the warehouse. A typically involving episode with plenty of mystery, nice atmosphere of railway tracks and rundown warehouses. A good entry, though it could have had more suspects.

    Signal Stop

Shades of 4:50 From Paddington. Janie Lennox (Ciaran Madden) is a passenger on a train who claims to have witnessed a murder at warehouse opposite where the train has stopped.

The police disbelieve her as she has a history of mental health issues. Only the Saint who was also a passenger on the train believes Janie.

When they go to the warehouse to investigate they discover the body of a dead biker.

Simon Templar seems to have attracted the attention of a biker gang and a man called Plackett (Brian Glover.) The police also remain on his tail as well.

Set in Britain, this has a gritty and darker feel. It also has some plot holes which undermines the story.

Simon Templar: [narrating] Not a particularly memorable trip. A cigar-smoking would-be tycoon. A hard-drinking foursome. A newly married couple. And a girl, probably bound for London to get a job. Well, at least she's pretty. Breaks the monotony. Lord, how I hate to be bored. You know, I really could use some excitement.
