Good sci-fi and Star Trek spoof

Kryten and Lister use a Triplicator to create two copies of Red Dwarf.

This is a decent episode with a cool sci-fi concept but for me the humour isn't consistently at the usual standard.

I think this had the potential to be excellent, but the approach appears to lean too much towards over-the-top silliness. Personally, rather than the high and low versions of the characters all looking and acting the same I would have tried to make them a bit more individual and done it with a bit more subtly. There feels like a reliance on sight gags which to me are reasonably funny and banter that is hit and miss. All that said it does have its standout moments, such as the low version of Rimmer wearing leather, chains and fishnets who is very funny.

The episode includes some spoofing of Star Trek, particularly with the concept of positive and negative versions of characters. It also has a scene where Lister is controlled via remote control very much in the vain of 'Spock's Brain'.

I don't rate this one as high as some of the early-mid series episodes, but I appreciate that humour is in the eye of the beholder so those who appreciate the comedy more will probably find it highly enjoyable.

    • Trivia
According to Chris Barrie, when he came out of his trailer wearing the Low Rimmer costume, Danny John-Jules was on the floor rolling in laughter.
    • Goofs
Lister says he once "played pool with planets" in reference to the earlier episode 'White Hole'. However, 'White Hole' ends with time being reversed and Kryten stating that the Red Dwarf crew will have no memory of the episode's events, which means Lister should have no recollection of having played pool with planets.

Holly: Rude alert! Rude alert! An electrical fire has knocked out my voice recognition unicycle! Many Wurlitzers are missing from my database. Abandon shop! This is not a daffodil. Repeat, this is not a daffodil.

      Rimmer: Well, thankfully Holly's unaffected.
