Reiji Kawashima in To Your Eternity (2021)

Review by nicolasmaczk

To Your Eternity

10/10

wow + tear up after 20 minutes !

I'm not familiar with the original material, but if the manga is any close to the anime, it must be an instant classic. I tend to think that Japanese anime shows are just like Japanese food. They have "some" recipes, and every cook have their own twists on them. I can "eat" almost everything and point out all the ingredients by now, but this one, it's some fine "cuisine" where I feel I'm discovering new tastes. I can't shake off the "Wow" and the eyes tearing up just after 20 minutes into it, even though I feel a little bit like it all was pushed down my throat... this show's only limited by the format, which is a shame, it should be 10 minutes longer and benefit from a slightly deeper character development, I should have been crying at the end of episode one, not just tearing up. A definite 10 though, it's art and story telling at it's best (for that short format). The animation is impressive... well everything is just really, really good. I don't know if it's an indy studio or a small one, I didn't see any big names on the intro, but I'm sure will be looking forward for their work. I've seen 6 episodes so far, they all come with their own thing, not once disappointed.
