Modern Love

Disregard the bad reviews, they didn't understand what they're watching...

I'm not gay, at least not according to the online quiz I took (just kidding), not a girl and I generally can't stand teenage love stories. Knowing the episode got low reviews and two minutes into it I though of skipping to the next one but decided give it a chance and Very glad I did.

The episode makes you feel the confusion and frustration of a teenage girl falling in love for the first time so close and so clear, I was glued to the screen.

The way she's afraid to find out she's gay and resists it so much just to find out at the end it's absolutely fine and nothing to be ashamed or afraid of is just the perfect message - clever and elegant!

Well done!

Headache.

This was a torturous watch for me. It's basically 30 minutes of kids running around and talking, or more accurately, screaming over each other. Is it aimed at 8 year olds or what? There's not one character I cared out. Avoid if you don't want a migraine.

Good message, TERRIBLE delivery

This is, by far, the WORST episode of Modern Love, yet. I live in NYC and this is like a bad experience on the subway - people just talking over each other to the point that you can't even make out the dialogue. Very poorly written and even worse directed, so the message, although good, gets completely buried. We have enough chaos in our lives today. This is like ADHD on crack and not the kind of frantic mayhem that we need right now.

Awesome portrait of a very first crush

I don't understand the low rates... if you remember the feelings you had as a teenager having your first crush on someone, you can appreciate how beautifully, accurate and moving is reflected in this episode... both actresses are as real in their character as if there wasn't a camera around. Great job, made me relive chapters of my youth. Thank you!

Episode gave me anxiety.

Watch for 5 minutes and you'll know what I mean, but other than that, I wouldn't recommend watching lol This episode was a WHOLE thing! It was a cute idea - a young girl coming to terms with her sexuality, I'll give it that, but all the screaming was so distracting.

THANK GOD I DIDN'T SEE THE BAD REVIEWS FIRST.

I don't understand the bad reviews. I actually don't write reviews but this one is a very beautiful and sweet episode showing the innocence of teen crush. One of the best MODERN LOVE episodes!

Annoying

Shaky camera, people talking over each other, and loud background noises make this episode the worst.

Worst episode ever of Modern Love

How did this episode get made? In general season 1 is far superior to season 2, but this episode is just awful. The main character is unlikeable and unwatchable. The camera work is atrocious, everything is herky-jerky from the dialogue to the camera work to the transitions. An absolute embarrassment that should have never made it to the series.

What's up with the abrupt ending?

Season 2 doesn't even compare to Season 1. I'm contemplating even watching any more after this episode. Absolutely no connection between the characters, terrible acting and nothing but chaos. Is it bc they are in middle school? Not enough time for character development. Throwing her relationship with her mom into the mix didn't fit the show.

Organic and beautiful!

Such a treat- didn't want it to end. Loved the Peppa Pig sleeping bag scene- and the panic that ensued. When the protagonist cried-loved her mother's reaction Kudos to all involved.

Is so bad that I couldn't keep on watching till the end

Inconsistent arguments, bad photography, predictable story since the title of the episode... bad, bad, bad... I surprised myself turning it off so quickly since I'm a fan of this series. It's a shame that this episode is so bad, the title was promising.

Best Episode of the Season So Far

Up until now this season has been kinda underwhelming. I liked all the episodes but with the exception of maybe the first none really stood out to me. After seeing the low rating for episode 4 I was hesitant but it ended up being a pleasant surprise. I thought maybe the same would happen with this episode but it ended up surpassing my expectations, becoming my favourite of the season so far, maybe even my favourite of the whole show.

I wish I could say that I don't understand the low rating but I do. While I'm sure there are many ratings left by people who have legitimate problems with the episode (and it's fine if you do, I'm not saying otherwise), a lot of it is definitely fuelled by homophobia. I've been on this website long enough to be able to recognise when a show/movie/episode that prominently features women, POC, members of the LGBTQ+ community etc. Has been unfairly targeted by review bombing. (Again, just to reiterate, I'm not saying that's where ALL the negative reviews are coming from, or that if you don't like this you're homophobic.)

Onto the episode itself, I loved it. It's rare to see teenage characters, particularly middle schoolers, handled with such care and attention in media. This reminded me a lot of Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade, with its spot on portrayal of teens. The characters in this episode feel like authentic teenagers, with the dialogue feeling like it was written by real teens. Too many teen shows feature ham-fisted dialogue that was very obviously written by an adult, so this was refreshing. This is all elevated by fantastic, naturalistic performances, particularly by the protagonist. Overall just a wonderful episode, and one of the only ones in this show I can really see myself coming back to multiple times.

Worse and worse

It's becoming a teenagers TV series. Not good.

First season was so insightful and the stories so diverse.

Did producers get run of ideas or they intend to switch the audience of this series?

By far worst episode

Normally i don't write reviews. But this oh god i have to. What's the worst thing in this episode is main lead her acting is worst I've ever seen. Also the background sound gave me headache. Kissing scene was cliche and cringe.

Baaaaad

Ugggh, the worst episode of the series. They try to create a whole drama over the personnal sexuality thoughts of a teenager.

First they wanna make clear the fact that she's gay, so she kisses a girl, but that's it, literaly, the only thing that could define her as a gay character.

Also how she "comes" out for her mom crying, like they couldn't even make up a dialogue where se could be like "mom, what would you thing if i didn't liked boys..." like they couldn't be a LITTLE more creative.

I think that the fact that the quizzes defined her as assexual could be interesting ground to explore, but NOOOO they messed that up too.

Sweetheart of a story

I can understand why some might not like this episode. I have two daughters this age and although the beginning scenes with the boisterous talking felt overwhelming to me, it turned out to be a lovely story.

I sometimes feel overwhelmed when my girls are talking to each other in the same manner. This film definitely captured that.

The awkwardness and the social missteps (including the mom's) were accurately depicted as were the friendships and excitement over the discovery of a first crush.

I'm glad I didn't skip it.

Touching and i enjoyed all of it. A nice coming of age story and it should be watched. On par with season 1.

Teens today.

This felt real with real teen experiences today. It was less dramatic than the teens I see. I loved how sweet and worried they were. The impact of the internet and social media on our identity is powerful, but really amplies adolescent issues in good and bad ways. I loved to see it.

Best Episode of the Season

Well written; good casting; creative shooting; middle school angst, but in a good way. The acting was first rate -- tender and real. A perfect mixture of shyness, doubt, hope, introspection and glorious self discovery.

Cute and honest

As a lesbian woman, I found that this episode does justice to the experience of discovering one's sexuality; while not everyone's experience is the same, there were some parts of the episode I personally identified with, particularly that anxiety when you're doubting whether you might be gay, and that rush of adrenaline that being around your first true crush gives you. This episode is cute and innocent, and I'm glad they didn't push the straight agenda further on Kate.

Of course I'm not surprised by the low reviews, as we all know that lesbians are among the most discriminated groups inside the LGBT+ community, I don't know why else would a person call this episode "disgusting". So, before giving this a bad rating, just admit you're lesbophobic and move on!

BEST episode of the 2nd Season

I am SO shocked by all of the other reviews!! This episode hit every emotion for me. The acting is incredible, the directing is fresh... it seriously transported me back in time to when I was in middle school, and I was TOTALLY wrapped up in it. Brilliant job, and definitely the best episode of the 2nd season.
