Changing Channels

This episode really is the high point of the show (well the entire 5th season). This is when the writing really had landed they knew who the charterers were, what they wanted them to be and how to get them there. All of the supernatural seasons are good but this season and this specific episode are on the great tier.

The concept of Sam and Dean being stuck in TVland not only is really funny but it has just the right edge to it to make it feel like the the trickster. The parodies are all funny. I really liked that they made sure that the real sets ended up being echoed in TVland. With the exception of the French Mistake, this is the most meta-episode and it is really fun on that level. Unlike the French Mistake it isn't just fun. The final reveal, at the time, was a big shock and while it is an obvious retcon it largely feels organic to the series on the whole. The final couple of minutes of this episode are tonally discordant with the parodies and that ends up saying something about fiction. This is probably Carver's best script.

Wonderful performances by all and shows up the comedic talent of the writers and director. The hospital show, Dr Sexy, what's more of the most hilarious scenes ever. Anytime Richard Speight Jr shows up I'm never disappointed.

The best part of this episode is its not just a standalone crazy one, though if it was that would be totally fine, it's just a level up when it ties in so well with the main plot, and to think the writers weren't planning this since seaoson 1. All hail the trickster.

Dean and Sam come to Ohio and out of the blue, they find that they are trapped in TV land by the Trickster. The powerful being explains to them that they need to participate in the TV show parodies; otherwise they will be strand in TV Land for the rest of their lives. When Castiel comes to the show, the Winchester's brothers believe that the Trickster might not be who they think he is.

"Changing Channels" is one of the silliest episodes of Supernatural. The spoof of a soap opera, a game show, a TV series and a commercial is not funny and the conclusion with the revelation of the true identity of the Trickster is unexpected and intriguing for an angel with such weird powers. My vote is seven.
