If I'm being honest, the case is forgettable. Truly, as I just watched it earlier today and can't remember the A plot.
That said - Having seen the two previous shows David Boreanaz starred in, the moments of truly painful, honest acting are few and far in between.
(though they do exist; namely specific scenes in two of the Buffy/Angel crossover episodes.)
That's not to say he's not a decent actor; he is.
But tapping & conveying raw emotion while maintaining story integrity sometimes just doesn't get fully realized.
But this episode, Agent Booth's pain is conveyed in a truthful way, both for the character as well as cismen in general.
Crying while trying not to cry, walking that tightrope while maintaining authenticity for the script as well as his acting partner in this scene, Emily Deschanel, is tough, but the mark is most certainly hit here.
Agent Booth's pain is so apparent that for a moment, belief is suspended, and I forget that it's just a scene of a television show and instead feels like a conversation I shouldn't be privy to.
To that end, Emily Deschanel's acting deserves a nod as well (though she almost always hits the mark!).
You can almost see the wheels turning in her brain while she considers the two options Booth presents her in the bar. Although she clearly doesn't feel either option is ideal, you can see her deciding to throw logic out the window and stay with him and drink. For Brennan to do that, it shows a true commitment to her partnership and friendship with booth that while has been shown before, to see it in such an intimate and supportive way is really beautiful.
As the show goes on, there are other scenes in future episodes that are also emotionally beautiful, even when it occurs during otherwise negative situations. I'm looking forward to the rewatch!
Cheers.
This episode is so fun despite the sad(ish) ending. Hodgins getting exasperated by Fisher, Cam getting Hodgins to say 'bunny' instead of 'bug', Angela in the field with that yellow patterned scarf, not to mention the return of Noel the stalker.
We even get a really sweet Brennan and Angela car scene (which is unfortunately only on the extended dvd version of the episode).
Now to get into the proposal scene.
I have no idea why Booth would propose to Hannah outside of it being blatant self-sabotage. Did he not notice how freaked out she got when she thought he was proposing earlier in the season? In my mind, in 6x11 when Booth watched Brennan with the conch shell outside the diner, he realised his feelings for her were still there and from then on, subconsciously found a way to get out of his relationship with Hannah. However, i really don't appreciate his "what's wrong with women" speech at the end - very 'nice guy' syndrome-y.
Anyway, I love this episode, if it wasn't for the number of times the killer said "plums" in reference to his balls, it would be completely perfect, but I guess I can overlook that and still give it a 10/10.
So glad you've arrived at Hannah's exit! I know the boys wondered at the start of the season how long she stuck around for, and here we are.
The case this week is forgettable and I only remember this episode as being the one where Hannah leaves, though I do love any ep with Fischer and of course the return of our fav stalker Noel.
The proposal- I think subconsciously Booth knew Hannah would turn him down (or at least he hoped as much) to pave way for him and Brennan now that she's finally admitted her feelings. After all we know Booth still loves Brennan despite his "love" for Hannah. I'm not sure what would of happened if Hannah had of actually said yes! I am very much a Hannah apologist as well, I don't hate her like a lot of the fandom, and agree that Brennan had her chance and she said no. Booth moved on BUT I dislike the proposal scene and her comment "she's not the marrying type". You packed up your life and moved to DC to be with a man who you know wanted to settle and get married. You gave him mixed signals. What did you expect? That he'd never propose?
All of that said, I also tend to agree with a lot of the other reviewers about the final scene and Booth's comments about all the women not wanting what he has to offer. A little gaslighty victim to me. But I'm glad Brennan of course chose to just stick around and have a drink and say nothing.
Overall 10/10
Worst part: Booth proposing to Hannah and her telling him she's not the marrying type
Best part: Booth proposing to Hannah and her telling him she's not the marrying type.

- GoofsWhen Camille takes Fisher's headphones out, she says "Hodgins". Camille was not calling Fisher by the name Hodgins when she removed his earphones, she was simply asking him when Hodgins would be done with the mold in reference to when Brennan was asking how long Hodgins would be and thought Fisher was ignoring her.

Special Agent Seeley Booth: I mean you like evidence. All right, Bones. Well, here's the evidence. The evidence is that there's something wrong here. Now, I - I fell in love with a woman. I had a kid. She doesn't want to marry me. And - the next woman, she's...
Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan: Me.
Special Agent Seeley Booth: Yeah! And now - I mean, what is it with women who just don't want what I'm offering here?
Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan: Booth...
Special Agent Seeley Booth: No. Just, you know what - drink. Drink. I'm just really - I'm just mad. I'm just really mad at all of you. I'm just mad, okay? So, you want to know how this is going to work? Okay, this is how this is going to work. Me and you are partners; that's what we do. We're partners. And I love that. I think that's great. And we're good people that catch bad people, right? And - and we argue. We go back-and-forth. We're partners and sometimes after we solve the case, we come here and we celebrate. That's what we do, we celebrate. So as far as I can see, that's what happens next. Are you okay with that?... Great cause you know, if you are, you stay here and you have a drink with me, all right? Maybe we have a little small talk, a little chit chat. If not, well, you can leave, there's the door. And tomorrow, uh, I'll find you a new FBI guy.
Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan: Those are my only choices?
Special Agent Seeley Booth: Yeah. Those are your only choices.
Dr. Temperance 'Bones' Brennan: ... Then I'll have a drink.
