The setting is interesting, action intense, some of the visual effects are as good as they come (although maybe not on par with Life of Pi), and the acting is good, that is it is appropriate for the characters and story. There is even deeper, philosophical aspects to this story. In a sense it is a study of fear and how one fights to overcome that fear. Troubled family dynamics are explored such as father/son issues as well. There is character development, something you don't see in a lot of summer fare. Once one gets past that this movie has a real father and son playing the leading roles, ignoring that they are stars and looking at them, with the appropriate suspension of disbelief, as characters within a story you can enjoy the interaction of the characters. Not the best movie I've seen this summer but not the worst. I really don't know what people expect nowadays but I was entertained, that is all that I ask. Kudos to the filmmakers for releasing a movie that wasn't a sequel or a comic book adaptation!
