Star Wars Command game figures

Happy Star Wars Day!

We watched the Star Wars Rebels series with the kids just after Christmas.  We love the series and have been waiting for them to be old enough to understand what is going on and not be too scared.  For Number 2 son's birthday, we got him some figures from the old Star Wars Command game.

I remember seeing the Star Wars Command sets in the shops.  The game was released in 2014, but I'm not sure that it was particularly successful, it seemed to disappear again fairly quickly.  The figures are pretty well detailed and should paint up nicely.  They must be about 1:32 scale.  Our set includes the Rebels Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren and Chopper, The Grand Inquisitor, a couple of Tusken Raiders and 2 Imperial Army troopers/AT-DP drivers.

Rebels characters.
We also have a few AT-DP walkers.

All Terrain Defence Pods.

There is also a rather fine model of the Phantom.  This has recessed panel lines that should take an ink wash nicely when I paint it.

The Phantom.

We should have had an extra set of figures with Hera, Zeb and some Stormtroopers as well, but the eBay seller failed to post them for more than a week and eventually refunded when I complained.  I'll see if I can round out the set another day.

West End Games - Star Wars Role Playing

Happy Star Wars Day!  May the 4th Be With You etc. etc.

I was a member of the Bangor Wargames & Role Playing Society for the 3 years I was at university there.  Being a fairly small university in North Wales, BWRP (pronounced "burp") wasn't a huge club but there was always lots going on.  With my friends Steve, Simon C, Simon T, I spent much of the time playing the West End Games Star Wars Role Playing game.  We also had occasional special guest stars Fran, Martin, Nigel and Conall who came and went over the years.

WEG's SWRP was a system I'd come across before in their Ghostbusters RPG.  It uses the "action dice" system where you roll a number of dice (eg 3D means roll 3D6, 5D+2 means roll 5D6 and add 2 to the total) against a target difficulty number..  One of the dice is the "special die", rolling a 6 on this means you get to roll an extra die and add that on too.  Rolling a 1 measn you either remove that die plus the highest scoring other die... or perhaps a "comlication" has occurred instead.  (You blasted the stormtrooper successfully but he unfortunately he fell onto the alarm button for the fortress...)

All characters have a range of skills in several main areas, for instance:

  • Dexterity (specific skills include blaster, dodge, firearms, melee combat)
  • Perception (including hide, sneak, camouflage)
  • Strength (lifting, jumping, brawling/unarmed combat)
  • Intelligence (first aid, computer programming, droid repair)

The main area has a basic skill level.  Specific skills within that area can be enhanced, eg you may have Dexterity 3D but 4D+2 blaster skill.  During character creation, you have a number of extra skill points to allocate out amongst the specific skills listed for your character.

Difficulty targets could range from 1-3 (easy) up to 25+ (heroic).  Sometimes opposed rolls might be made, for instance if your character decides to try and dodge when a stormtrooper fires a blaster at them.

This was around the time that Star Wars was undergoing a revival thanks to the Timothy Zahn Heir to the Empire series featuring Grand Admiral Thrawn - a character who is at last about to make it to live action, having already appeared in the fantastic Rebels animated series.

We had many exciting adventures together, sometimes as Rebels fighting against the evil and oppresive Empire, other times as Imperial heroes standing up for law and order against those Rebel scum... we fought humans, aliens, clockwork robots, monsters.  For one game we included some Giger Aliens who predictably slaughtered all the Rebel Commandoes my lieutenant was leading, this occasion was noteworthy because we had some Star Wars figures and some of the then-new Aliens action figures to play with too.

Sometimes we had a Jedi in our party... I recall one unfortunate character who always rolled badly when trying to use his Force powers.  He became known as "crap Jedi" and during one game it was commented that he hadn't said what colour his lightsaber blade was.  He wasn't amused when I quickly suggested it was brown, to giggles from the other players.

We managed some truly epic adventures.  BWRP officially started at 2:00pm on a Sunday, a time which unfortunately clashed with the S4C (Welsh Channel 4) timeslot for Babylon 5.  We used to meet up down at the club, then decamp to someone's room (usually mine or Simon C's), often via Safeway to stock up on snacks.  We'd play until about 7 or 8pm, them head out for burgers, chinese or pizza before continiung the game until 1 or 2am on the Monday.  Some campaigns lasted for weeks and certain characters might subsequently reappear in a future campaign.  Sometimes, a whole new campaign might come from a tiny adventure seed in the backstory of a previous campaign's character.

Back in those days, the internet wasn't what it is today.  When one of us got a new sourcebook, we'd all head down to the library, load up our photocopy cards and copy all the interesting bits from each other's books.   These days you'd just look for a second hand edition on ebay or try and find some files online.

I loved those days of adventuring and I'll probably never manage anything like that again.  University is probably the only environment that lends itself to that sort of lengthy game session where there is no job pressure and no parent to tell you that you should have gone to bed 4 hours ago...

If you've never tried the SWRP from WEG, I'd suggets giving it a try.  WEG ceased to exist several years ago, but you can find all their books free to download on the Star Wars Timeline web site.

Star Wars Mini-Rigs 2: Ground vehicles

More Star Wars Mini-Rigs... a couple of types of ground vehicle this time.

The MTV-7 Multi-Terrain Vehicle towers over 15mm figures.  With the seat area closed in to form a cabin, this could make a great transport vehicle.  As with the flying Mini-Rigs, there is lots of great panel detail which should paint up well.

The spring-loaded wheels move when you push the hull down.  I'm tempted to glue it with the legs at about 45 degrees.  The laser cannon is missing from the front, but it might make a nice civilian transport/exploration vehicle anyway.

The MLC-3 Mobile Laser Cannon is missing a clear dome from the top, but it might look even better with a turret there as some sort of heavy tank.

The top opens up, so I could put in some internal detail. Or more likely just use it to transport a few figures, then forget about them until the game has finished.

I have 4 of these (all missing their domes) plus at AT-AT hull.  Another option would be to combine all of them into a Sandcrawler type vehicle with 4 big track units underneath.

Whatever option I choose, I'm not likely to get a chance to do much with them until our building work has finished in the summer.  Most of my modelling supplies are packed away at present, these vehicles are only out because I thought they might help distract the kids one weekend.  I'm not sure whether I'll be able to get them all back into my gaming stock now though!

Star Wars Mini-Rigs 1: Aerospace vehicles

I have a few Star Wars Mini-Rigs which I will be converting into 15mm vehicles and starships.  These can be found for as little as £3-4 each if you get a job lot for spares and repair.  The batch I got back in 2020 (which included the Rebel Transport that I'm turning into a crashed starship) include 3 AST-5 Armoured Sentinel Transports.

These have 2 different modes, the first being a flying craft which will be a very fine shuttle for a small group of 15mm figures.

They have excellent panel detail which will paint up well.

The engines are just stickers but I can add in some extra features here before I paint them.

The second mode is an alternative landing pose.  The guns swivel to allow it to engage ground targets.

The cockpit is substantial enough to fit a  3.75" Star Wars action figure, so loads of space for a 15mm crew.

Some 3d printed starship bridge stations will fit into the front of the space and maybe some seats along the sides.

The detail under the rear wing section is even better than the detail on the top - it's a shame it's all hidden away underneath where you can't see it most of the time!

The Imperial Shuttle-inspired ISP-6 Imperial Shuttle Pod is the second type of airborne mini-rig I have.  Mine are all missing their canopies, so will need a fair bit of extra work to prepare them for 15mm use.  The wing guns are also missing, but it will be easy to trim off the mounting points.

The wings fold up and down thanks to a little switch underneath.  I'll try to preserve this function in the rebuilt model.

The cockpit on this one isn't quite so easy to fit anything inside, so I'll need to have a think about whether to try and fit anything in it.

Next time I'll look at some of the ground vehicles I have.

Star Wars Day - May the 4th be with you!

Well, today is Star Wars day, May the 4th*.  As luck would have it, I received a couple of book orders in the post today, the art of The Mandalorian and Rogue One.

Both are excellent books, packed full of inspiration for the sci-fi wargamer.  The Mandalorian is perhapd a little more useful but both are packed full of stunning artwork.

I won't be adding that many cables to my buildings!

Inspiration for a starship crash scene.

Cheap Star Destroyers

Poundland is always worth a check when I'm passing and these were a good find last week - Star Wars First Order Resurgent class Star Destroyers.

3 First Order Star Destroyers will form a good core to a fleet.

Sadly no AT-STs  or hovertanks in stock!

Not the iconic original Star Destroyer design (in fact these are supposed to be twice their size) but still well worth £1 each.

Various sources classify Star Destroyers as battle cruisers but this never seems quite right.  The battle cruiser traditionally had the firepower of a battleship but in order to achieve the speed of a cruiser it was more lightly armoured than a battleship.  This description doesn't fit the powerful Star Destroyer, in fact I don't think you can classify it in any traditional modern or historical warship class.  It has powerful weapons but it's more than just a cruiser or battleship.  It carries scores of fighters but it's not just a carrier.  More than 8000 stormtroopers can be landed by 100 landing craft but this is by no means only an assault transport.

I think the Star Destroyer should be classified simply as a Star Destroyer - a multi-role warship fulfilling several traditional roles.

Mine will be facing a number of familiar looking fighters from GZG...

AT-TE walkers up-gunned and repainted

As you may recall from my post back in August, I found these 2 AT-TEs in the local charity chop.

An hour or so with some brass tube and a suitably sized pin-vice drill has substantially improved them!

All the stumpy little guns have been hacked off and replaced with more fearsome, longer-barrelled cannon.  Years ago this would have taken me hours with a hacksaw, sandpaper and probably some swearing.  Fortunately someone showed me how you cut brass tube by simply scoring it with a sharp knife then snapping it off, much easier!

The main gun has a very long barrel (drooping here because it's not glued in place yet) replacing the stubby old barrel.  Upper hull guns have been drilled out and given bigger barrels with sleeves.  The lower hull ball-mount guns have a single piece of very fine tube inserted into the end of the existing gun barrels.

The rear upper hull ball-mounts have sleeved barrels added the same as the front upper hull mounts.  I imagine these rear ball mounts will be used in an anti-aircraft role as well as anti-infantry.  I've posed them pointing in different directions to demonstrate their independent targeting.

After a plain white undercoat, hand painted, they've had a base coat of old GW red gore and Vallejo matt black.  The red areas have been washed with watered down Vallejo sepia ink with some extra lining around some of the more prominent panels. Black areas have been drybrushed with Humbrol 32 dark grey.

The next task will be to work out appropriate markings for them followed by weathering and other detail.  Should it have a cockpit window or is it fully enclosed with only sensor ports visible on the outside?
